Knowing how to grow flowers from seed, corm, tuber, bulb and bare root has connected me and changed my relationship with flowers. Knowing the difference between a hardy annual, a biannual, annual, and a perennial informs the florist to know what flowers can be seasonally accessed with a mindful approach to design. It keeps the challenge alive when you adhere to what’s growing locally in your area. Living in California so close to many flower farms is an absolute game changer and a luxury. Although we don’t have the abundance of lilacs and peonies and tulips and snowdrops and lily of the valley that cooler climates offer. There is no perfect anything. But to understand how and when and where flowers thrive best is essential to the art of flowers.
