A little Oklahoma Mattress history — from the middle of World War II.
This Oklahoma City phone book ad appears to date to around 1943, when wartime restrictions limited the use of steel in civilian products.
One line in the ad tells the story:
“We will resume the use of NEW SPRINGS in Mattresses when present restrictions are modified.”
With new steel springs restricted, rebuilding existing mattresses became especially important. Oklahoma Mattress restored mattresses using the materials already available—renewing the cotton, rebuilding the interior and giving customers more life from the mattress they already owned.
At the time, Oklahoma Mattress was located at Sixth & Olie, before moving to our present home at 915 NW 4th.
More than 80 years later, mattress rebuilding is still part of what we do.
Some things change. Good craftsmanship has a way of sticking around.
