For years, grocery stores helped set the standard for what people think flowers “should” cost. But what many people don’t realize is that some of these companies have struggled financially over and over trying to maintain those expectations.
My wholesaler told me today that a well-known local grocer is no longer buying flowers through them because another company specifically bought out the floral side to help get them back on their feet financially. For the 5th time!
Let that sink in.
The very people setting the standard for cheap, convenient fresh flowers are going broke trying to provide them.
That’s how expensive this industry really is.
Fresh flowers are not a simple product. They are imported, perishable, seasonal, labor-intensive, and affected by weather, holidays, tariffs, freight costs, and supply shortages constantly. Wholesale prices can change week to week, especially around holidays like Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day.
We truly aren’t “overcharging.” Most of us are doing everything we can to stay sustainable while still providing beautiful, quality work.
It honestly makes me sad that an entire industry has been pushed to normalize luxury products at prices that often aren’t sustainable even for major companies.
I just wanted to share some transparency from behind the scenes because I think customers deserve to understand the reality of the floral industry a little more. 💐
