A sensory deprivation float tank is not on our typical project wish list, but for this project it just made sense!

Tucked into a Bisazza-tiled nook, the float tank sits alongside a shower by the opening to the sunken courtyard. Serene doesn’t even begin to cover it.

When our client said “surprise us,” we knew we had to go all in. What started as a solution to a practical problem, this lightwell quickly became the heart of our Bridgehampton Basement project.

The inspiration? Ancient roman mosaic tradition, layered with creatures you’d find along the Long Island coast. Looking at the walls, you see the Peconic Bay marshlands at sunrise — featuring ducks and flowers and inspired by a piece from the Naples Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Looking down is like looking at the ocean floor of the Hampton’s coastline — teeming with sharks, squid, lobsters, and local fish. The floor mosaic was inspired by a piece from a villa on the Aventine Hill in Rome that is featured in the Musei Vaticani. All are rendered in hand-laid tiles, designed and crafted by mosaic artist Stephen Miotto.

The crown jewel of this courtyard is the custom bronze dolphin fountain by sculptor Josh Dow in a classical Roman tradition.

“We wanted it to feel underground but underwater,” Katie said. And that became the thread we pulled through the entire basement.

When we designed the powder room for our Bridgehampton Basement project, we knew we wanted it to work in conversation with the other spaces in the home — carrying a subterranean-meets-underwater theme that is whimsical and enveloping.

Deep teal walls swimming with illustrated fish, this paper accomplishes this goal. It speaks to the greater story etched into the walls, the floors, the mosaics of this project.
