Always the first full weekend in October, the Lakota West Craft Show, going strong for over 45 years

Our high school PTSO covers two physical locations 7 minutes apart - a freshman building and a 10-12 building. We have less than 10 consistent PTSO volunteers covering 2 buildings, ~2800 students and ~300 staff. The craft show is our biggest fundraiser of the year. It provides funds for:

Freshman Career Readiness Day (Real World 101)
Freshman Field Day
Sophomore Orientation
Junior ACT Day Snacks
Senior Picnic
Senior Scholarships
Quarterly Positive Behavior Incentives
Club Donations
Prom Donations
Field Trip Donations
Holiday Gift Program
8 Staff Conference Dinners
2 Staff Appreciation Weeks
And many other Firebird initiatives!

Our current setup allows for 238 booth spaces. We have allowed vendors to pay for a double booth. In 2026, we had 176 vendors confirmed after some cancellations in the weeks leading up to our craft show. On Friday night, 12 vendors were a no-show for setup. Some were double booths/locker bays. A total of 164 vendors were present on Saturday at opening, but 2 did not return on Sunday.

Lessons were learned. New processes will be put in place for last minute waitlists. Sometimes we have to leave a space “open” if we can’t fill that later cancellation with a product that is not similar to surrounding booths.

We do our best to avoid proximity duplication. More and more vendors are bringing more and more product to diversify their inventory that was not originally approved and we are addressing that as it’s discovered.

The reality is that volunteers have dwindled year after year. For our craft show, the students can still continue to earn service hour letters for things like National Honor Society. OR instead of earning hours, they can earn a $25 PTSO donation for a 3-hr volunteer shift and they designate that donation to their school club or sport.

Adult volunteers can also select a school club or sport for their volunteer shift donation. This has helped increase our volunteer participation and immediately gives some of the PTSO raised dollars right back to those helping our cause.

This week, the PTSO will give the school $1125 for 7 student clubs and 7 student sports teams.

Who raised the most with their volunteer hours? The Lakota Dance Team worked 13 shifts earning $325! Second was FBLA/Business Club with $175 and Third was the Girls Golf Team with $125. And what about service hours? We had one student who volunteered TWELVE hours over the course of the weekend.

Our PTSO did a full craft show debrief at our monthly meeting last night. We have a lot of fun facts to share about our 2026 event. So tune in to learn more about our craft show…who comes, who volunteers, and where do those fundraising dollars go? First up…attendance! 3560 shoppers visited us this year. Thank you for coming out and supporting our vendors!

*2025 had roughly 3000 shoppers; in the last 3-4 years we are trending 3000-3500 attendees.
* Before our 2026 chairperson who led the last 4 craft shows, we do not have accurate data due to admissions, raffles and concessions not being kept separate.

We actually intended to get a picture of an empty food shed to show you just how low we were. But we opened the doors… and there was food waiting to be collected. 🤣😅

You guys really do show up.
