I find high quality wool from farms that hand raise their sheep as if they were family! Since I am an avid knitter, developing my own yarns and seeking out fibers seemed like a logical and creative next step. Although the natural colors are beautiful by themselves I also develop colors and hand dye the yarns. The small town of Jorstad Creek is found on the shores of Hood Canal on highway 101. I fo

und myself stopping at this wide spot in the road because of the incredible view, and the little fishing shack next to a sandy spit that reaches into the water. For some reason this simple, quiet place set me to dreaming about what I would do if I took my hobby and made it a business. Developing a product that supports the hardworking shepherds and farmers of the northwest made sense to me. Since this daydream of mine started at Jorstad Creek, I named my company after the place that launched it all.

We strive to repeat and match our colors from clip to clip on our Shetland. It can be a challenge when there are small variations in the yarn base from season to season. One thing we know, even the misses are beautiful! We love what we make.

Fiber Traditions Weekend Retreat

Last Fall we sponsored a wonderful retreat in historic Port Townsend, Washington, "Shetland Wool Weekend." This weekend retreat focused on American Shetland in yarn and in spinning fiber. This year Jorstad is sponsoring a retreat this November 1, 2 and 3 to focus on additional local fibers and fiber producers. With the help of our partners, The Bazaar Girls Yarn Shop, this retreat includes both returning and new instructors to help attendees explore local fiber, color, and techniques.

Stranded knitting continues to be a focus with the return of Varian Brandon, author and designer of fabulous stranded color work designs and patterns. Varian's book, "Waiting," featured amazing and innovative stranded color hat designs. With her supportive instruction, students will learn and become proficient with stranded knitting techniques. For the skilled knitter, Varian will be teaching stranded steeked shawls as she continues to design wildly original patterns that explore color and form. See some of her work in Ravelry or at brandonknittingdesigns.com. Varian's designs are also on Instagram .

We are excited to report that returning to the retreat is local treasure and spinner Judith MacKenzie. Also returning is the color workshop with Kerry Graber and Madison Wallace, with added information and hands-on practice. This is a fun exploration for knitters, spinners, weavers, and crafters who want to expand their knowledge and creativity with color.

New to the retreat is Michael Kelson, spinning instructor. Michael will be showing spinners how to work with local fibers, featuring breed-specific fiber preparations from local producers. Lots of hands-on opportunities to explore the fibers grown near Port Townsend.

You will have the opportunity to meet and greet some of the amazing local shepherds as part of the program! And by the way, enjoy locally grown food from a fabulous home town caterer for your lunches and the Saturday night banquet.

The weekend closes on Sunday morning with a "choose your own adventure" opportunity to try various products or speak with instructors before you head home with a treasure trove of new skills, new friends, and fond memories. Jorstad and the warm and welcoming Bazaar Girls are looking forward to providing a rich and memorable retreat for everyone.

Tour de Fleece with Team Indigo-go!

Jorstad Artisan Yarns and Indigo Purls are offering a Tour de Fleece group experience for our spinner friends! The Indigo-go Spinning Journal can be purchased through Indigopurls.com, along with a specially curated 12 ounce Jorstad-dyed fiber pack as one of the goal options. With journal purchase you join our Indigo-go team either on Discord and/or Ravelry.com, and are eligible to be entered into three prize drawings. Let us help you get motivated to spin during the Tour de Fleece!

The journal helps you follow along the actual Tour de France, highlighting the different routes, starting or ending towns, and elevation gain. Read about the geography of the area, or learn about the history of the Tour as you make notes about your own spinning journey. Set goals and record them in the journal pages.

There are three goal categories to choose from, and a community of spinners ready to cheer you on. Achieve your goal, post about it, and you will be entered into the drawing for that goal category.

In-person spinning events are planned for team members local to the Olympia area, but you don't have to be nearby to join the team! Share your progress, thoughts, and experiences about spinning in Discord or on our Ravelry Team Indigo-go thread as you go. Post pictures! Most of all have fun spinning along with the athletes as they take on challenges during the Tour de France.

Purchase your Tour De Fleece journal today at Indigopurls.com and Indigo-go!
