Our Story
Born in New Orleans and raised in Dallas, Lauren has always emphasized style and aesthetics. It played out in many ways through her life, including through personal style, a partial career in fashion, and an utter fascination with building and interior design. And then, in 2015, after several small-scale design projects including a tiny home design-build, Lauren Rodriguez and her husband kicked off an 2.5-year major remodel of a 1930s home in Olympia, Washington. As investor, designer and project manager, she oversaw the re-design and hired her friend and trusted general contractor Kurt Loertscher (KLR Construction) who shared her commitment to honoring the home’s WWII era style, while bringing modern functionality and unique aesthetics to the space. The project was very challenging—the home had a disjointed layout over 4 levels, no second-story plumbing, few 90-degree angles, old wiring, wood rot, and badly damaged fir floors that two contractors urged Lauren to replace (she held firm to its restoration with eventual success). It was a total gut through and through. Because of the sweet old shutters with wooden hearts hanging at the time Lauren purchased the property, her daughter lovingly dubbed this “The Heart House.”
In 2018, The Heart House went on the market. In less than 48 hours and with several offers on the table, it went under contract to a Seattle couple for twice its 2015 purchase price. After the sale, Lauren reflected on the experience. The response to the listing had been overwhelming—the home hit #1 on Zillow by day two and her realtor shared he “had never seen so many people at an open house” in his 20-year career. And he was getting inquiries into Lauren’s design services.
Inspired by the experience, the encouragement of industry professionals, and the fervor of a long-held passion, in January 2019, Lauren took a leap of faith, left a long-time career and launched her studio, Sparrow Design Company. She hasn’t looked back. Since launching, Sparrow has completed several residential remodel and styling projects and has made the leap into commercial styling work, with an exterior building refresh, restaurant project and a spa set to open in 2021! In the last year, Lauren received formal education in design, including certification in kitchen and bath design. She is also blessed to work with amazing contractors and craftspeople who bring her visions to life.
