💜Prayer Shawls💜 (An update from a previous post)
What are prayer shawls, and why make them?
Prayer shawls are handmade items meant to comfort those who are suffering, or need a reminder that they are not alone. The crafters who make these items say prayers for the intended person as they create the shawl, and even after giving the shawl.
Why make them? Why gift them? I have witnessed the joy and comfort that it brings people as they receive these special shawls—religious and non-religious alike. Every time someone I know has had a medical diagnosis, lost someone close to them, or was simply going through a very rough time, it has brought them immense relief knowing someone was thinking of them when I gave them one of these shawls made by my church back home.
My grandma got me started on making these and gifting these to people in need through a prayer shawl ministry at our church. To date, they’ve gifted hundreds of these to people over the past 10 years or so.
Personally, I received one when I was battling my first bout of infertility. I slept with that shawl, read with that shawl, and walked around my home with that shawl draped over my shoulders for months. It brought me so much peace! And to end that story on a happy note, I did eventually conceive my firstborn daughter.
As shown below, I just finished this beautiful prayer shawl for my mom who was just diagnosed with stage one breast cancer. It’s incredibly soft (a velvety yarn) and a darker shade of pink that I thought she would enjoy. My hope is that it brings her some comfort and peace while she fights this disease and kicks it right in the b***y!
