Every weld is a potential weak point.

That's why Fort Knox safes and vault doors don't start as six separate steel panels welded into a box. We begin with thick sheets of American steel that are folded to minimize the number of seams.

The remaining seams are then welded from both the inside and outside with 100% weld pe*******on, creating a strong, continuous steel enclosure.

Why does that matter?

Fewer seams mean fewer potential weak points. Full-pe*******on welds maximize the strength of every joint, helping create a body that's built to withstand decades of use.

It's one of those details you'll never notice once the safe is finished.

But it's also one of the reasons a Fort Knox safe is built differently from the very beginning.

One of the most important security features in a Fort Knox safe is completely hidden.

Behind the outer door shell is a heavy steel security plate that covers 100% of the door face from edge to edge. Other safes only reinforce the area around the lock. At Fort Knox, the entire door is backed by steel.

Why does that matter? Security AND Fire

The security plate adds strength and rigidity to the door, helping it resist pry attacks and forced entry attempts. It also helps the door maintain its shape during a fire. Excessive heat can cause thinner doors to warp, breaking the fire seal earlier and allowing heat and smoke to enter the safe. The security plate helps preserve the integrity of the door when it matters most.

Fort Knox offers security plates up to a massive 3/8" solid steel plate on our Legend series. Additional security plate upgrades are available on most models, allowing customers to build a safe around their specific security needs.

The Spartan is the only exception. Rather than using a composite door with a hidden security plate, our entry-level Spartan features a solid 3/8" steel plate door from the start.

It's not flashy. You'll probably never see it.

But when you're building a safe designed to protect valuables for decades, the details hidden beneath the surface matter just as much as the ones you can see.
