It’s all that JAZZ
Latin Jazz and Art Festival
Grammy winner Nestor Torres, Emmy-nominated singer Fabiola Mendez and their friends will headline a Puerto Rican-inspired Latin Jazz and Art Festival in the City of Casselberry on Saturday, Sept. 12, 5 to 9 p.m.
Torres, a Puerto Rican flautist, has released 19 albums, including winning a Grammy in 2001 for “This Side of Paradise.” With 4 Latin Grammy nominations, one Grammy nomination and one Latin Grammy Award; collaborations with diverse artists such as Gloria Estefan, Kenny Loggins, Dave Mathews, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Michael Camilo, Paquito D’ Rivera and Arturo Sandoval; as well as performances with the Cleveland, Singapore, and New World Symphony Orchestras among many others, are testament to the remarkable journey of an Artist who continues to grow and enrich the lives of those who experience his talents. Nestor’s music has always been about that: a Crossover fusion of Latin, Classical, Jazz and Pop sounds. Rich and engaging, complex and exuberant, profound yet accessible.
Torres will be joined by many of his friends including Fabiola Mendez, whose music explores the culture and ancestry of her homeland of Puerto Rico. Méndez is an Emmy-nominated composer known for her unique blend of genres, including folk, jazz, and Afro-Caribbean influences. Her music takes listeners on a journey through various identities, cultures, and roots. As a Puerto Rican cuatrista, Fabiola Méndez showcases the rich musical traditions of her homeland. She has collaborated widely across genres, notably performing alongside global superstar Bad Bunny during his acoustic NPR Tiny Desk performance. She has also played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Philharmonic, and legendary folk artist Totó La Mompos.
During the concert, some of the area’s greatest Latin visual artists will showcase their works. Everything from paintings and sculptures to mixed media masterpieces will be on display in Casselberry City Hall and the Art House. As part of the event, stop by the Experience Contemporary exhibit at the Art Center and the Cycles Florida's Sculpture Guild exhibit Sculpture House. Viewing for all exhibits is from 5 to 8 p.m.
Kicking off this year's Latin Jazz and Art Festival will be the exciting dance group, Kalindá. Their performance is rooted in traditional Bomba and is dedicated to preserving Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance traditions in Central Florida. Next on stage will be Tampa-based Master percussionist, Dimas Sanchez and the Afro Latin Project, who will warm up the crowd with high energy, vibrant sounds and rhythms from Bomba and Plena mixed up with plenty of jazz and funk.
