Hi again, we just wanted to come on and give you all an update on Steve.
He is still in critical care and probably will be for at least a couple more weeks. His injuries include internal bleeding, collapsed lungs, and several broken bones.
Right now their main concerns are the bleeding and breathing. When he first arrived he required many blood transfusions, but at this point the bleeding has slowed down.
He has been on a ventilator since he got here, and now they’re talking about doing a tracheostomy and gastrostomy, which will allow them to address his broken bones. Once he is stable enough, they will operate on his spine and hip.
We haven’t heard him say anything yet, but now he is opening his eyes, answering questions by nodding, and he is able to follow commands like giving a thumbs up when asked. He also has meaningfully held and squeezed our hands.
Once he gets out of here, he will be in a long-term rehab facility. We have heard over and over that this is going to be a long road to recovery, and even though each day has had its ups and downs he is making improvements that give us hope.
We also want to thank everyone for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers and sending us well-wishes. It helps to know that we have so many people who care for our family.
Lastly, we want to let everyone know we’re working on a GoFundMe page to help support Steve in his recovery. We will make a post on Steve’s page with a link that we hope you will share on Facebook and any other social media platforms that you use. Thanks again, and we’ll keep you updated.
