Two motorized screens can have the same housing, the same tracks and the same quiet motor, and still give two families completely different summers. The difference is the fabric.

A 90 fabric blocks about 90% of the sun. The 50 to 70 fabrics keep the breeze and stop the bugs. The 95 to 99 range handles heat, glare and privacy. And the color can matter more than the number: dark fabric keeps your view clear, light fabric reflects more heat.

"I got tired of buying my wife patio furniture every three to five years."

That's how our owner, Kip, got into motorized screens. Since late 2020 he's seen the same mistakes again and again, so we sat down and listed the top 10.

A few of them:
• A fixed track can let a screen pop out in a strong afternoon gust. A floating track flexes and stays put.
• "Wind abatement" is not hurricane protection. Ask for the Florida Product Approval number.
• Standard insect mesh won't stop no-see-ums.
• "Lifetime warranty" usually means the product's lifetime, not yours.

You did everything right. Brisket on at sunrise, cooler packed, flag up. And by 2 p.m. everybody's crammed in the kitchen because the covered lanai is unbearable. 🥵
