Q: I’m remodeling my bathroom. Do I automatically have to buy water?

A: No. Don’t assume you need to purchase additional water just because you’re remodeling.

If your home is serviced by Cal Am and falls under the Monterey Peninsula Water Management District, your property has water credits that apply toward the fixture count in your home.

For example, having two sinks in a bathroom does not automatically mean you need to purchase additional water.

Every project is different, which is why understanding your existing water credits and the requirements for your remodel should happen before you start spending money.

There are plenty of shortcuts you can take during a remodel.

We don’t recommend any of them.

At The Boyle Design Group, we believe the work behind the walls matters just as much as what you see when the project is finished. Proper planning, permits, skilled trades and attention to detail take time — but they also help ensure your remodel is done right.

Because you’re not just remodeling for today. You’re investing in your home.

Q: Do I really need a permit for my remodel?

A: If we’re touching plumbing or electrical, almost always, yes.

Permits aren’t the fun part of remodeling, but they’re an important part of doing the job correctly. They help ensure the work meets current requirements and can save you from much bigger headaches later.

At The Boyle Design Group, we don’t believe in shortcuts. We believe in doing it right the first time.

Mix Textures for a Spa-Like Shower

A beautiful bathroom isn’t about choosing one perfect tile. It’s about choosing materials that work beautifully together.

For this project, we layered sleek vertical tile, soft gray patterned tile and natural stone to bring dimension and warmth to the space. Each texture adds something different, but together they create a calm, cohesive look that feels polished without feeling overdone.

It’s those thoughtful combinations that can turn an everyday bathroom into a space that feels like a retreat.

Q: When do we get to the fun part?

Right here. Once the plans are drafted, the selections you've been dreaming about begin — cabinetry, tile, lighting, countertops, and every finishing detail. Every aspect thoughtfully chosen, right down to the grout color. That's the whole reason for the discipline of the first four steps: by the time we're choosing beautiful things, we know they'll fit, function, and last. Ready to start? The first step is just a phone call.

Behind the scenes at The Boyle Design Group.

This is the part of the process most people don’t see: comparing colors, materials and finishes and looking at how every detail will work together before installation.

For this project, Steel Blue became part of the conversation alongside a bold patterned tile. It’s a great example of how even a small color decision can influence the overall feeling of a space.

Design is in the details — and we love this part.

A Kitchen Designed for Real Life

There’s nothing better than standing in a finished space and seeing all of the decisions made along the way come together.

This kitchen is bright and welcoming, but it was also designed to work hard. Thoughtful storage, generous work surfaces, layered lighting and an efficient layout make the room practical for everyday cooking and gathering.

The quieter details make it special — warm countertops, textured tile, classic cabinetry, dark hardware and natural accents that keep the white palette from feeling too formal.

For me, successful design is never just about creating a beautiful photograph. It’s about creating a room that feels right when you walk into it and works beautifully when you live in it.

Q: Why can't we start picking tile right away?

Because drafting comes first — always. Architectural plans are the foundation of everything that follows, and they're what a general contractor needs in order to give you a real starting budget. Choosing finishes before the plans exist is how people fall in love with a countertop that doesn't fit the layout they end up with. We draft before we decorate. It's less glamorous, and it saves clients thousands.

Bathroom Spotlight

A well-designed bathroom should make everyday routines feel a little easier — and a little more beautiful.

For this space, we focused on creating a calm, light-filled retreat with a generous double vanity, abundant storage and illuminated mirrors that provide both function and a clean architectural detail.

In the shower, frameless glass keeps the room feeling open while the elongated geometric tile introduces just enough pattern and dimension to give the neutral palette personality.

It’s a space where every element has a purpose, but nothing feels overdone. Quiet, functional and designed for the way the homeowners actually live.
