Paducah Dogwood Trail

Paducah Dogwood Trail Official page for Paducah’s Annual Dogwood Trail. The first trail was two blocks long along Sycamore in Paducah's west end.

History of Paducah's Dogwood Trail: The lighting of the dogwood trail in Paducah became a tradition in April 1964 when the Civic Beautification Board began the tradition of touring Paducah in bloom at night. In 1964 when Dolly McNutt, chair of the Civic Beautification Board, visited Knoxville, Tennessee, she was taken by the beauty of Knoxville's lighted dogwoods. When she returned to Paducah, sh

e persuaded members of the CBB that sponsoring a lighted dogwood trail would benefit Paducah. It is now a 12-mile driving tour traversing downtown, LowerTown, and other residential neighborhoods. The tour showcases Dogwood, Japanese Maple, Red Bud, and Weeping Cherry trees as well as blooming garden areas and other flowering species.

While we’ve got you here, here’s some great general info on Dogwood trees and planting them from CBB Member Mary Katherine Dossett with the Paducah Extension office:

Are your dogwoods beginning to bloom? Spring has arrived, bringing renewed growth and vibrant color to the landscape.

The flowering dogwood is a small, deciduous tree native to North America. Prior to planting, it is advisable to consult your local Extension office and conduct a soil test to ensure that site conditions are suitable. It performs best in partial shade and in well‑drained, acidic soil.

Dogwoods require consistent moisture, particularly during periods of drought. We recommend to put 2 inches of mulch around the tree to help retain moisture. Pruning should be completed in late fall to avoid damaging the current year’s growth. Consider using landscape lighting to highlight your tree’s distinctive beauty whether you are on or off the trail this year. Solar lights are a good choice for trees far away from the home.

This year's Dogwood Trail begins March 30th (judging on March 29th!) so now is the time to clean up your landscape and get your spotlights out on your blooming trees! If you don’t have a Dogwood tree, we do have a “Best Baby Dogwood” award so plant now for next year. Bloom Bright Paducah!
