In my rush to get back to working on this I was neglecting probably the most important part, the "fairing". This is where you use a long batten and your planes to trim each of the frames and ensure that the planks will fit flush and be watertight. You're also checking to make sure that all of the dimensions are true and that the frames are straight and even. It's suggested that you spend a good bit of time on this process as this will be the true nature of your boat.

So, a little update. I've had a lot of things going on lately and have finally found some time to get back to the boat project. Started working on the planking of the sides. It's a neat process using compasses to transfer marks from the model to the planks so that I can cut them to fit. I've just started so there's not much to tell at this point. When I get further into it I'll let you know how it's going.
In something related to this project, they were clearing the lot behind my house and I noticed that there was a medium-sized live oak tree on the property. This will be perfect for milling the wood out that I need for the frames of my boat. I spoke to the guy clearing the lot and asked him if he would save the oak tree for me to which he said he would. I have to admit that during the process I began to wonder whether or not he actually would leave the oak tree for me as I saw him move it close to his truck at one point and thought he was taking it home for himself. But at the end of the job I noticed in my empty lot there was a pile of oak trees. I really feel like a jerk for doubting his intentions. Thank you Ed! You are indeed a gentleman and a man of your word!
Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to move it to a place where I can work on it.....lol!

Some progress on the 1/4 scale model of my dory. Making the model first has been extremely beneficial, it has already saved me on several potentially costly mistakes. It also allows me to get a good idea of what materials will be needed, and helps me learn methods of construction.

Ahoy all!
So a few months back my boss and I were riding down US1 along the Indian River on our way to look at a job. I kept noticing the masts of sailboats sticking up out of the water. I told him it was a shame they couldn't give me the boats before they sank to the bottom of the river, cuz here I am a guy who desperately wants a sailboat and they just keep letting these boats litter the river bottom. My boss jokingly pointed to a small sailboat something like a sunfish and made the comment there you go Ron. But the thing is he was right that's exactly what I want and since it's unlikely that anybody's going to give me their sailboat I would have to make my own.
Since the mask thing hasn't really brought in much revenue lately, and mask making supplies are rather expensive. I've decided to shift gears. All of my masks will still be available if you'd like one but I'm going to be spending my time on a new project.
I've decided to build a Swampscott sailing Dory. I intend to build it in old traditional clinker built methods with copper rivets and roves. Although I will be using some power tools most of it will be done by hand. I also intend to use modern epoxies. I recently purchased three books from John Gardner on how to build a Dory and have been studying them for about a month. I'm going to build a 1/4 scale model of the boat first just a familiarize myself with the process. I fully expect this project to take me a couple years to complete, so I won't be focusing on my masks during this time. However, if you'd like me to post pictures of my progress I'd be happy to do so, just let me know.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm kind of a pirate history buff, so I'll just think of this as a prop for my pirate.

Well.... I did a thing. The weather was awesome, cool enough for me to don my Oldron costume and have a blast interacting with the patrons. Met some very interesting people. I really love doing these markets, a few sales would be wonderful tho.

A few small things to fix yet, but for all intents and purposes I give you ....spy v spy!

Well, I did my first market with my masks at the Oddities and Curiosities Market. It was a fantastic market with plenty of very talented artists and vendors. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, unfortunately none of this resulted in any sales. I did hand out a lot of business cards so hopefully I may pick up some business in the long run. In the meantime, I'll refine my display, get a little better organized and gear up for another day.
