In celebration of the 20th anniversary of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, the Château de Versailles has opened a special exhibition dedicated to the making of the beloved 2006 film. Fittingly, it is being held at the Petit Trianon, Marie Antoinette’s private retreat and one of the film’s original shooting locations.
We have always adored this film, not only for Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal Marie Antoinette, but for its extraordinary visual feast. The powdered wigs, pastel silks, extravagant interiors, and endless towers of macarons. Sofia Coppola managed to make the eighteenth century feel both wonderfully decadent and surprisingly modern, complete with a soundtrack that is the icing on the cake.
The exhibition, developed in collaboration with Sofia herself, gives a behind-the-scenes look at how the film came together. On display are original costumes by Milena Canonero, shoes by Manolo Blahnik, props, storyboards, sketches, and photographs from the production. Visitors can also discover how the real rooms of Versailles were transformed for the film.
It is remarkable how, twenty years later, her interpretation of Marie Antoinette continues to influence fashion, interiors, and our fascination with eighteenth-century France. The exhibition runs through January 24, 2027, so there is still plenty of time to plan a visit. In the meantime, we think a rewatch is in order!
