Today's design reminder: one of the easiest ways to create a cohesive space is by paying attention to tone rather than theme.

A warm wood frame paired with warm wood floors, or artwork with cooler tones in a room that already leans cool, can instantly make a space feel more intentional.

Nothing has to match perfectly. Wood grains don't need to be identical, and neither do the colors throughout your room. Simply deciding whether your space feels predominantly warm or cool is a great place to start.

And don't be afraid to mix in the opposite tone here and there. A little contrast often adds the interest that makes a room feel complete.

I designed a building for a new music school just below Canal Street, right around the corner from the Ghostbusters house.

Back-to-school season is not only for families with students. It changes the rhythm of entire communities.

Schedules tighten. Evenings get shorter. People start thinking about focus, routines, and the spaces where daily life happens.

That makes August a useful time to look at your walls with fresh attention. "Opera in L.A. 1963" may be the kind of work that helps a room feel more intentional as the season shifts.

I'm seeing a lot of artists celebrating World Photography Day today and wanted to join in on the appreciation!

It's a celebration of the way artists preserve moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed. Every work of art begins with the same simple act: paying attention.

Artists notice the light, the atmosphere, the emotion, the relationships, and the everyday moments that many of us walk past without a second thought.

"Butterfly Paint 2020" is part of that tradition. Thanks for taking a moment to reflect with me today.

The Dove of Peace 1968

St. Theresa's Church was built in Palm Springs by architect William F. Cody in 1968.

Cody built his idiosyncratic church on very, very busy Ramon Road in Palm Springs. Many drivers seem to speed right by it without even registering its presence.

Its concave pre-cast concrete garden walls seem completely arbitrary until you enter the main sanctuary, when the vaulted roof makes sense of it all.

The colors are me taking poetic license, of course - the reality is that the building is relentlessly grey. Its personality is anything but.
