Spent today commissioning HVAC systems, which included balancing the ERV! 🛠️🌬️
If you have an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV), balancing it is an absolute must. It basically means making sure the amount of fresh air coming in exactly matches the stale air going out. Why does this matter? It’s all about your home’s air pressure. 🏠⚖️
Here’s why a balanced house is a healthy house:
🚫 The Trap of Negative Pressure: If your ERV pulls out more air than it brings in, your house becomes a vacuum. It starts sucking unconditioned outside air through every tiny crack in your walls and windows. Hello, cold drafts and allergens! Worse, it can cause gas appliances to backdraft dangerous exhaust back into your home. No thanks. 🙅♂️
🚫 The Danger of Positive Pressure: If your ERV brings in more air than it exhausts (which is exactly what I was dealing with!), your house acts like an overfilled balloon. It forces your warm, humid indoor air deep into your wall cavities. In the winter, that moisture can cause hidden condensation, rot, and mold. 💧🍄
✅ The Sweet Spot (Balanced Pressure): When it’s dialed in perfectly, you get continuous fresh, filtered air, maximum energy efficiency, & a comfortable, draft-free home.
We used our DM32X manometer to measure & fine tune the pressures on our FIT80 ERV with MERV 13 filters, & we a bit of math to dial in the fan speeds, so we are balanced & breathing easy. 😌
