Some projects mean more than design. This is one of them.

Working with Beacon Housing on the Pine St. Bungalow Court is especially meaningful to me. After these historic bungalows were lost in the Eaton Canyon fires, the opportunity to help bring them back while preserving their original design and character feels incredibly important.

These homes are part of a community’s history, and rebuilding them is about more than restoring structures. It’s about honoring what was lost, preserving the details that made these bungalows special, and helping create a path forward for the people and community connected to them.

As a designer, I believe our work has the power to do more than make spaces beautiful. It can preserve history, create a sense of belonging, and help people feel at home again.

Pro tip: Document everything before the drywall goes up. Your future self will thank you!

Before the walls close up, we’re photographing plumbing locations, electrical runs, framing, HVAC, and all the behind-the-wall infrastructure, including exact measurements and locations of anything we might need to access later.

It might not be the most glamorous part of a renovation, but future us will be grateful. Whether it’s troubleshooting an issue, making repairs, or planning future updates, these photos can save time, money, and a whole lot of guesswork.

A designer and his husband walk into a complete home renovation together…what could possibly go wrong? 😂

Having designed and managed plenty of renovations, I know firsthand that the process isn’t always as pretty as the finished photos. I know the decisions, delays, surprises, and unexpected moments that can come with taking a home down to the studs.

So I’m going into our own renovation with two things: realistic expectations and a lot of optimism.

When you’re renovating, it’s so easy to think, “Let’s just pick something and keep going.”

But one decision rarely exists on its own. Change the flooring, and it can affect the cabinetry. Change the cabinetry, and suddenly you’re reconsidering the hardware, backsplash, lighting, and paint.

I’ve learned that taking a little more time upfront can save you a lot of time, money, and frustration later.

And yes, even as a designer, I have to remind myself to slow down. Sometimes the smartest renovation decision is simply: “We’re not ready to decide yet.”
