Not every home needs a complete makeover.

Sometimes it needs a better layout, a fresh perspective or someone to help make sense of all the possibilities.

At Susan Teachey Design, we do everything from furniture selections and space planning to full renovations and complete home transformations.

We also design vacation rentals, creating spaces that look great, function well and hold up to plenty of guests.

Apparently, a large part of interior design is just trying to get answers from different people.

Some days I’m asking the questions. Other days I’m the one being asked.

Either way, we’re all just trying to get this project finished!

A few days in Chicago with SKS touring the showroom, watching kitchen demos and getting a closer look at what luxury appliances can really do.

I always love the learning part of trips like this, but getting to do it with this group made it even better. VRD is such a collaborative group. We share ideas, ask questions, compare notes and genuinely want to see each other succeed.

A lot of learning, plenty of inspiration and a whole lot of fun mixed in on this trip! Pretty lucky when this gets to count as work.

We are officially in bathroom renovation season and want to know the feature we’re including more than ever?

Grab bars.

And before you picture something straight out of a hospital bathroom, they have come a long way! They’re prettier, available in great finishes, and can be worked into the design so seamlessly that clients are usually surprised when I point them out.

Because if we can make a bathroom safer without sacrificing the way it looks, why wouldn’t we?

So tell me, style or safety first? My answer: both.

If you’ve met me, this makes complete sense.

There is a very specific amount of space in my brain and apparently most of it is reserved for floor plans, furniture placement, pattern combinations and making things make sense.

It is what it is. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Fortunately, this is exactly the kind of information my clients hire me for. 😂

This kitchen got more than a cosmetic update.

Rotating the island changed how the entire room functioned, opening up the flow and creating a much better work zone. From there we reworked the cabinetry, added storage, lightened the finishes and gave the kitchen a cleaner, more intentional feel.

The blue island became the anchor, but the biggest transformation is really in how the space works.

Apparently we nailed the pillow situation. 🐾

Pattern, texture, scale and color all working together, with one very enthusiastic vote of approval.

Sometimes the clearest sign that a room feels comfortable is that someone has already claimed their spot.

Apparently, there were signs.

Looking back I think what drew me to design was never just the pretty part.

I loved thinking about how a home worked just as much as how it looked. Where the furniture should go. How a room could function better. What would make it more comfortable. And then, all the fabrics, finishes and details that gave it personality.

That combination is still what I love most about design today- making a home beautiful without forgetting that people actually have to live in it.

Turns out the signs really were there all along, just ask my mom!

A little of how we got here because a lot has changed around here in the last couple of years.

I’m Susan, interior designer, shop owner, professional sample collector + the person behind Susan Teachey Design and Curated Pawleys.

A few years ago I was running my design business from Alabama. Then life brought me back to the Carolinas. My family moved to Pawleys in the summer of 2024 and a few months later I took a pretty big leap and bought a local home shop. That November, Curated Pawleys began.

The first year brought a lot of change both personally and professionally. My dad was sick most that time and passed away in June 2025. The women working alongside me stepped in more than they probably even realized. They helped keep the shop going, welcomed people in, handled the day-to-day and gave me room to be where I needed to be with my family. I will always be grateful for that. 🫶

Just a year later we expanded Curated into a much larger space in June 2026. Once again they were right there with me through all of it. Moving, organizing, setting up and somehow making the whole thing come together. Looking back it’s hard to believe how much changed in such a short amount of time!

Today the Curated Crew is still the friendly faces welcoming you into the shop, helping you find the right thing and keeping everything moving behind the scenes. Their hard work, ideas and support are such a big part of what Curated Pawleys has become.

And maybe the most special part is that I still feel my dad guiding me along in so much of what I’m building. ❤️
