UPDATE:

You may have noticed that I haven’t posted in a minute. Due to a change in my day job, my spare time devoted to cutting and shaping wood into somewhat functional pieces of furniture, cutting boards, etc has been reduced greatly.

I still enjoy the process and end result of the craft of woodworking. I simply am without time to devote to it.

I appreciate everyone who has patronized my work! You keep me going and challenging myself to do better each time I am in the shop.

Consider this a hiatus until further notice.

Thank you,
Zach

Can’t wait to use this in my garage.

These will all be the same thing soon enough…though it doesn’t look like anything right now.

Sometimes I hate showing my work. It’s slow. It’s not necessarily interesting to see my hunks of wood that didn’t get fully assembled due to lack of time or because all my plans fell apart on the shaping side (like, every single time).

But I’ve had to reconcile myself with the reality that my skills are commensurate with the amount of time I’m able to devote to the craft. “Practice makes better,” as they say.

The stir-craziness of the last week has given me some much needed clarity about the time I spend in the shop: slow down, enjoy the process, try new things (even if the new things are doing things the old ways), and don’t be afraid to make mistakes (nothing in woodworking is perfect).

Hopefully you will get to see in the next few weeks what these projects materialize into.

Having these projects going in the shop has been refreshing.

I’ve wanted to try making wall art using scrap wood…it needs some work, but the finished product should be good.

I’ve also wanted to try my hand at inlays…so I inlaid a terribly free-handed cherry butterfly into a crappy piece of spruce. For a first try, it’s not bad.

And the cutting board. What can I say about this cutting board other than this: sometimes you learn how to do something when it’s too late to fix it. Not all designs are on purpose. However, the colors are pretty sweet.

What do you do when you have no custom orders to build? Whatever you want.

With the Christmas season in full swing, I haven’t been able to post much of my busyness in the shop. Both due to secrecy and busyness with church as well.

Working on a box (that may not work out). That is all.
