Houses We Love, No. 01
A new monthly series. This one’s from Val, sharing the homes, spaces, and people that have shaped how she sees and thinks about design.

Starting at the age of 22, Liza Macray and John Corcoran were my beacon regarding what design was and what being in the presence of great design felt like in your belly and bones.

All of their spaces are uncompromising down to the smallest detail.

This is the green home they built together with their own hands, located in Tivoli, NY. This is the town where I opened, owned, and operated two restaurants and a bakery.

They put my life on a direct trajectory. They are still my guides.

The Laurel House was never about making a new house look old, but creating a sense of history and resonance that felt natural to the place.

Set among the rolling countryside of Pipersville, we looked to the warmth and character of an English country manor: layering materials, pattern, collected pieces, and architectural details that feel as though they could have accumulated over generations.

Nothing too precious. Nothing too perfect. A home with depth, personality, and a strong sense of belonging.

A country manor was born.

When Eric and Larry returned to Studio IQL for their second project with us, it felt like a reunion of minds and hearts.

After completing their Philadelphia pied-à-terre, we found ourselves together again, this time in the bucolic farmland of Pipersville, where a 1990s developer-grade home sat against forever-wild state land near New Hope.

The setting had history and beauty. The house needed the same.

Our goal was to give it character, resonance, and a sense that it had evolved here over time.

The best review of a bathroom? The owners tell us their showers now last an hour. Beautifully considered and designed to make the everyday feel a little more indulgent.

It’s all about getting cozy. Our Landenberg project embraced open spaces, but we knew it needed a touch of warmth too.

The grand, symmetrical nave of this 1890s church posed a challenge: how do you create intimate, livable spaces within such a vast room?

Our solution: a catwalk along one side of the nave, creating a cozy family room below and a functional office above. The result? The perfect balance of open space and intimate corners for those moments of quiet comfort.

Old houses tend to have smaller rooms, but they also have something rare: intimacy. Rather than erase that, we leaned in, making the new spaces feel expansive while keeping the coziness of the original footprint. The kitchen now flows from dining room to backyard, the stove sits opposite windows that open to nature, and cubbies, shelves, and hidden storage keep everything in its place. Big changes - still feels like home.
