The world is noisy. Making art is how I step away from it.

I look for beauty and light—the sky on a morning walk, flowers against blue, the movement of water, an unexpected color or shape.

I pay attention. I collect what moves me. I bring it back to the studio.

My creative practice is a refuge from the noise. It gives me a place to be still, to notice what is beautiful, and to turn that attention into something of my own.

Gloria Steinem’s powerful voice and lifelong work changed generations of women. She challenged injustice, defended reproductive freedom, and taught us that our voices, choices, safety, and stories matter.

As a high school student, I bought Ms. magazine—much to my father’s dismay. Its pages introduced me to reproductive rights, writers like Alice Walker, and perspectives I had never encountered before. Her influence helped lead me, while attending Clark University, to intern at Planned Parenthood in Washington, D.C., and at the Women’s R**e Crisis Center in Worcester.

Years later, when I saw Women of Abstract Expressionism in Denver, I understood how Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler had embodied in paint what Gloria articulated so powerfully in words: a woman’s right to occupy space, create freely, and be recognized on her own terms.

Those artists broke barriers in paint; Gloria broke them through words, organizing, and action. She helped generations of women recognize their own power and possibility. I will always be grateful for her extraordinary life and the path she helped create for all of us.

Thank you, Yayoi Kusama, for showing us that art can be alchemy—the transformation of inner struggle into color, wonder, and infinite possibility. Your dots traveled far beyond the canvas, inviting millions of people into worlds that felt playful, immersive, and alive. You made so many people happy. What an extraordinary gift to leave behind.

Rest in color. Rest in infinity. 🔴⚪️🕊️
