We’re kicking off Creative Direction for our Michigan midcentury project today, so in honor of that we’re celebrating our Woodland Retreat project…this East Falls Philadelphia midcentury is still one of our favorites with its cozy textures and softly layered colors. Excited to see how this new one evolves, I love this period of architecture! ✨

Hey friends! Excited to share this new project with you, a sophisticated “library kitchen” project we wrapped up earlier this year. We took a tiny kitchen, removed a wall and created an expansive and flexible space where our clients can cook and hang out with friends in the nearby banquette. We mixed traditional elements, rich finishes and some modern punches to give this space longevity. While we were at it too we gave their powder room a renovation with moody personality and designed a custom millwork piece for their primary combining a desk area and tons of storage for clothes, laundry, and shoes.

Who’s ready for all the 3rd floor details on our Britainhouse project?! This level was a lot of fun to design, originally several chopped up rooms, we reworked the layout to provide the two guest bedrooms with en suite baths and so many cozy, layered details.

Fun fact: we demo’d the spaces in advance of our design planning and realized we had height to go up through the attic in the front bedroom, and vaulted the ceiling for some extra volume in this space. In the kiddo guest space, we lived our dream of a whole room wrapped in beadboard, including the armoire, with a sweet, layered tile bathroom just off the space.

In our Britainhouse project we reworked the layout of the second floor for all things primary suite. The main bedroom is wrapped in a softly patterned wallpaper, providing a quiet visual texture. We sourced an antique mantle from a Frank Furness house with the most incredible hand carved details and installed it in the room to anchor the space. A small dressing room is positioned off the bedroom with a custom armoire and open hanging space that leads to the primary bathroom, which of course says it all with the gorgeous soaking tub! We designed the leaded glass window in keeping with other homes in the area and had all the glass built into the frame by a local artist.

Any of course, we can’t forget the laundry! We tucked a wee laundry room just behind the primary bathroom, complete with tons of storage to make it as functional as possible and a small sink backdropped by a custom tile mural inspired by our clients favorite flowers and handmade locally. There’s no window in this space so we decided to create our own view. ✨

The kitchen at our Britainhouse project was so much fun to design! Pale blue cabinetry paired with a bold tumbled marble check floor gave our clients the soft, English-style kitchen of their dreams. The coffee bar was modeled off an English-style larder, and the custom plate rack is the perfect spot to display a collection of vintage dishes.

Just off the back corner of the kitchen is a wee powder room wrapped in the coziest tree filled wallpaper, an homage to our beautiful sections of preserved forest here in Philadelphia.

We rounded out the back and side of the house in a small courtyard fitted with classic bluestone pavers complete with a Vestige Home designed scalloped shed to house the electric bikes and bins, keeping the clutter out of site with charm ✨

Who’s ready to see more of our Britainhouse project?! Let’s talk some of our favorite details on the first floor.

We brought the charm back into this classic Philadelphia vestibule with a bold floral wallpaper and a lovely green wall tile with back marble trim details. In the living room custom built-ins flank the original fireplace and provide much needed storage and display space. We played with a mix of modern and traditional furniture shapes to bring a collected feel to this space.

In the dining room, we custom designed the dining table to fit this more narrow space, it’s the perfect spot for both weeknight meals and holiday gatherings. We updated the small windows that originally housed air conditioning units with shimmering leaded glass in a traditional diamond pattern to allow light to flow into the space. You might be wondering where that little door under the stairs goes to…it’s the entrance to a family room located in the fully finished basement. When closed it completely blends into the wall, you know we love a surprise moment.

Sharing some happy news today!

Our Rittenhouse project-lovingly referred to as our “Britainhouse” project is up on House Beautiful today! We’re excited to finally share all the details of this project. It’s an ode to our clients love of British design with a side of minimalism. As we have the privilege to work in these historic homes, it’s always important to us that we don’t strip away the character, even when we’re doing a major renovation. Drawing from this townhouse’s storied setting and Philadelphia’s architectural legacy, we made sure to incorporate traditional furniture forms and time-honored craft techniques to usher this home into her next phase of life.

Cheers to our awesome VH team for their design and management work throughout this project as well as the contractors and subs who worked tirelessly to make this project happen! 🙌🏻
