After 20+ years of designing homes, we’ve seen plenty of trends come and go. But some design details just never get old.

These are the elements we find ourselves coming back to again and again. Not because they’re trending, but because they add personality, character, and that little something unexpected that makes a home feel special.

Our personal favorite is wallpaper tucked behind bookshelves or on the ceiling. A little surprise that makes you stop and look twice✨

Bold wallpaper can transform a room.

Our clients asked us for a happy home, and the dining room is one of the places were we had a lot of fun! We went with bold, tropical wallpaper in pinks and oranges and the room came alive. We also added soft orange drapes, a custom chandelier with a little pink in it, a pink velvet chair, and 2 pieces of commissioned modern art to add a little twist in a more traditional space.

Our clients entertain a lot so this is the room everyone ends up in. They say it’s an instant mood boost, whether they’re hosting or just sitting in there themselves.

When someone says “shore house,” you probably picture navy and white stripes. We went a different way.

For this modern Jersey Shore home, we skipped the expected nautical blues and built the palette around the softer side of the coast - sand, shells, driftwood and sun-washed tones.

Warm, layered neutrals create the foundation, while unexpected details, sculptural forms and bold moments keep it feeling fresh and distinctly modern. A beach house palette…just not the one you were expecting. 🐚

This or that, MPD team edition. Kasey and Diane made the calls this round, and here’s where they landed:

Cozy breakfast nook over the big island. The island always photographs well, but the nook is where people actually end up. That’s usually where we start a kitchen.

Dramatic powder room over a calm one. It’s the one space in the house where you can go all in. Dark walls, a great light, art that makes people stop. It’s small, so let it be a moment.

Collected and layered over perfectly symmetrical. Symmetry feels calm, but a room that looks gathered over time is the one that feels like home. That’s the look we come back to again and again.

Limewash over wallpaper, this time. It gives you movement and depth without the room feeling busy, and it shifts with the light all day.

When we’re on sample number 10 and I’ve watched the client fall in love with all of them. 😂

Trust me, I get it. When everything on the table looks that good, “just pick one” stops being helpful advice. This is your home. You’re allowed to sit with the tile for a week and text me a photo of it in three different lights.

No pressure from us. We’ve got more swatches where those came from. But remember, trust in our recommendations is a good thing! Afterall…that’s why you hired us;)

Color sets the mood of a room before anyone sits down.

It’s the first thing you feel walking in and the last thing you’d think to question, but it’s doing a lot of quiet work. The right color can make a space feel calm, social, grounded, or awake. The wrong one fights you every time you’re in there. And most of it has nothing to do with what’s trending.

That’s the part we spend the most time on at the start of a project. Not just what looks good, but what a room should actually do for you.
