Thank you Suburban Life Magazine for sharing the work we did to create a safe, comfortable and functional space for one of our favorite clients!

This renovation is a great example of how a small bathroom in an older Center City building can be transformed into an accessible and functional space for our client who has been blind since birth and later in life in a wheelchair. The new bathroom provides for wheelchair access by widening hallways and door openings, replacing regular doors with pocket doors and running Coretec waterproof flooring from living areas into the bathroom. A few of the accessibility features include shower bench that extends out into the bathroom 21" for easy wheelchair transfer, accessible roll-in sink, extra high toilet for easy transfer (21"!!), hand held shower and easy access plumbing location and plenty of grab bars. The laminate linen cabinet provides great storage and the wainscoting is made from a durable commercial product to avoid wall damage. The bathroom design also included widening the adjoining hallway and closet access.

Excited to share my latest project on Aging in Place which also covers designing for disabilities. Our client was over 65, blind since birth and in a wheelchair after losing a leg in an accident over 25 years ago. She was moving from an old 1 bedroom apartment in Center City Phila to a 2 bedroom unit in the same building. Our goal was to make the space beautiful, comfortable and wheelchair accessible to help her to continue to live independently now and into the future. I'll be discussing some of the design features included in this space TOMORROW September 22 4:00 PM in a ZOOM presentation Harcum College. Great article with some new suggestions on how to best prepare to age in place in style including reference to how to evaluate your home for safety with a new AARP Home Fit App, and some trendy A.D.U. (Accessory Dwelling Unit) information. Aging in Place may not be so bad after all!

As more baby boomers move toward retirement, more and more are designing homes that will accommodate their needs even as they grow older and lose mobility.
