Join us in welcoming Canevas Fatal (pronounced kahn-va fah-tal) to the US!
This French brand founded in 2018 by Gauvain Manhattan creates needlepoint canvases and kits illustrated by artists from all around the world.
In France, needlepoint is called “canevas”. After graduating with a fine arts degree, Gauvain decided to take another look at canevas which was considered an old fashioned practice. By bringing in fresh designs and new techniques, Canevas Fatal has attracted a new generation to this unique craft.
Canevas Fatal’s designs are printed on Penelope canvas which features paired warp and weft threads. This allows you to stitch over the doubled threads for a larger stitch, or to split the doubled threads for smaller stitches, or both! For example, you could stitch the larger stitches for the background, then add finer detail by stitching the smaller stitches in the body of the design.
For the larger stitches, most threads made for 13 mesh will give medium coverage. For more full coverage try a strandable like Watercolours, Silk & Ivory Trio, or a floss such as DMC or Splendor. For the smaller stitches, thread made for 18 mesh will give full coverage.
If you are new to Penelope canvas, we strongly recommend using stretcher bars, because the canvas can shift when worked at different stitch sizes.
