Columbus Independence HS teachers overwhelmed amid 'unprecedented' influx of Haitian students
By Cole Behrens, Columbus Dispatch, 10 hrs ago

Teachers at Independence High School told Columbus City school board on Wednesday that their school resources are being stretched thin by what an administrator said was an "unprecedented" influx of Haitian Creole-speaking students.

Teachers told the board and The Dispatch that the student population at Independence High School, located on Columbus' Southeast Side, has soared from around 600 to nearly 900 students. They said the majority of new enrollments have come from immigrant communities or disciplinary transfers of students from other schools.

Kelsey Gray, an Independence High School teacher, said that while the district has provided some assistance for the school with additional teachers, more help is needed. She said school employees at their breaking points sent emails en masse to board members last month because they "are drowning and weren't getting any help."

"There have been a lot of district administrators in my classroom in the past couple of weeks, and I would really like to stand here and say they've been there to support, but it feels they are there to intimidate and criticize," Gray said.

Deputy Superintendent Kathryn Moser said during the meeting that the district has closed enrollment at Independence High School. She said she had an opportunity to visit and hear firsthand from staff about the challenges facing the school.

"Independence (High School) experienced an unprecedented influx of students, many of whom are Haitian Creole, and this is similar to what we are seeing in some other cities in Ohio," Moser said.

Immigrants from Haiti in Ohio have become a flashpoint in national discourse since September after now President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance spread baseless rumors that Haitian immigrants in the Dayton suburb of Springfield were eating dogs, cats and wildlife. Local officials have consistently refuted those rumors, which resulted, in part, from misinformation posted on social media.

Moser said that Columbus Global Academy is full as of this week, and West High School also may need reallocation of resources to accommodate an influx of new students. The district has already added administrative support at Independence High School, added three teachers and delivered additional furniture and computers to the school.

Board President Christina Vera said the board supports the staff and students of Independence High School and thanked "everybody that's putting their arms" around the school as it manages growth.

"We recognize that this is also going to impact other school buildings," Vera said. "Growth is a good thing, but we need to be able to support that growth. ... We obviously want to be able to talk about the strategies that the district is going to be able to do to support that growth."

Independence High teachers: We need more help
During the public comment portion of the school board meeting, five Independence High School teachers spoke out on the situation at the school, saying they needed more resources to deal with an increased English Language Learner (ELL) population and additional security to manage a raised level of disciplinary issues from disciplinary transfer students.

Courtney Bryant, an ELL teacher, said more English education resources are desperately needed for a school now working to educate "students who have never been educated before, who aren't literate in their own language, who have had to cross borders."

"We all know what's going on with the Haitian Creole population coming here too, and the trauma they're going through now is some of the political rhetoric," Bryant said.

She said the Independence High needed an additional math teacher and a bilingual instructional assistant that speaks Spanish or Haitian Creole.

"When I have students, 44 to a room, it's just not fair to me — it's not fair to them," Bryant said.

Traci Johnson, another Independence High teacher, said the district needed to do better to manage the "glaring" inequities caused at the school by the influx of new students.

"As a teacher who is feeling more burned out, the kind of burned out right before spring break and you need a vacation, I can't help but feel slighted," Johnson said. "This disparity is a significant failure to meet the needs of our students."

However, teacher Gray commended Vera and board members Sarah Ingles and Jennifer Adair for taking the time to address each of the emails that 37 school employees sent to the board about the situation.

"Christina Vera is the only district adult that has ever come into my room in four years that's actually been there for the kids," Gray said. "In my opinion, board president Vera's decisions are based on what's best for students, because she truly cares about them, and I think she cares about the staff, too."

Haitian migrants flashpoint issue in 2024 election
Republicans, including Senator Vance , now vice president-elect, made Springfield, Ohio's growing Haitian population a major issue in the presidential race. Vance helped spread the rumor on social media about pets and wildlife being eaten, which has been repeatedly refuted by local officials .

Trump raised the rumors, which had initially surfaced on social media, in the September presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. Since then, there have been threats against the Haitian immigrants in that city.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has previously said the influx of immigrants in Springfield has posed challenges to the city, including taking a toll on resources, but the migrants have also contributed to the local community and economy.

Last year, the city of Columbus helped relocate more than 800 people at the Colonial Village apartment complex off Livingston Avenue, the majority of whom were Haitian immigrants that were part of an alleged human trafficking scheme, The Dispatch previously reported .

DEMS ARE....WEIRD

Piers Morgan's stunned two word response to Joe Biden biting a baby
Zoe Delaney

TV presenter Piers Morgan was left in disbelief on Wednesday night thanks to President Joe Biden sticking a baby's foot in his mouth and taking a nibble on the tot's leg.

Halloween in American is even more terrifying than usual thanks to the spookiest holiday of the year coinciding with the last few days of election campaigning. Democrat Kamala Harris, the current Vice President, and Republican Donald J. Trump, a former president, are currently pleading with voters ahead of yanks heading to the polls on Tuesday 5 November.

But until then, President Biden is still the man in charge. During the final days of his presidency, the 81-year-old is unwittingly pulling focus from Harris and Trump thanks to his antics. On Wednesday, Biden caused quite a stir with his antics as he appeared to take a playful bite of a baby's leg during a White House Halloween event

President Biden shocked Piers Morgan and many others thanks to taking a nibble on the baby's leg
The child, donned in a chicken costume, seemed delighted as the President engaged, while its mum held the baby out for the bizarre photo op. The scene shows Biden also kissing another child's forehead and nibbling at another tot’s knee, much to the amusement or dismay of the online crowd.

Social media users were quick to react to the unusual move from Biden, with YouTuber Piers Morgan one of the many to express his dismay at the scene. Taking to Twitter (X) on Wednesday night the former Good Morning Britain anchor quote-tweeted the image of Biden biting a baby and added: "Sorry, WHAT??!!!!!!!!!! [shocked face emoji]"

Morgan wasn't the only one to comment on the weird moment, with another Twitter user quipping: "President Trump is mingling with garbage men at his rally in Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Joe Biden is literally BITING BABIES at the White House Halloween Party. WTF IS THIS TIMELINE? "

Others couldn't hold back their laughter, as a tweet read: "I can't stop laughing at this clip of Biden greeting a baby dressed as a chicken at the WH Halloween event while the most OMINOUS music plays." A third commenter was left incredulous, posting: "Someone call 911 immediately. JOE BIDEN JUST BIT A SECOND BABY AT THE WHITE HOUSE. This is NOT a joke. He stuck this second child's foot in his mouth three times!"

Elsewhere during the White House's Halloween bash, Biden pulled faces as kids showed off their costumes and his aides rushed to smooth over a recent controversy where Biden allegedly called Trump supporters "garbage". President Biden, 81, made a gaffe when speaking to a Latino advocacy group, referencing a distasteful joke from Trump's rally.

Trump responded to Biden's garbage jibe by dressing up as a refuse worker
"Just the other day, a speaker at [Trump's] rally called Puerto Rico a 'floating island of garbage,'" he told attendees, referring to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's poorly received jest at Trump's event in New York City. The president then added, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters, his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American," further stating, "It's totally contrary to everything we've done, everything we've been."

Post the incident, White House officials have been in damage control, clarifying that Biden's use of "supporter's" with an apostrophe was meant to single out Hinchcliffe, not all Trump backers. However, the comment has already riled up Trump's base, with even Trump himself criticizing Biden's statement as being "worse" than Hillary Clinton's notorious 'deplorable' comment.

In response to the backlash, President Biden swiftly amended his earlier statement: "Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage - which is the only word I can think of to describe it," he clarified.

"His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don't reflect who we are as a nation," Biden said in a statement, stirring confusion and annoyance among both detractors and backers. In the meantime, Trump took advantage of the situation with a fresh outburst aimed at Biden during a Pennsylvania gathering.

'Breach of Protocol': WH Press Officials Consulted Biden Before Improperly Changing Official Transcript of His 'Garbage' Remark
Blake Mauro
After consulting with President Joe Biden, White House press officials altered the official transcript of his Tuesday call in which he referred to former president Donald Trump's supporters as "garbage," a move the stenographer's office supervisor labeled a total "breach of protocol and spoliation of transcript integrity," the Associated Press reported.

According to the original transcript from the White House stenographer’s office, Biden said, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters—his—his demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, and it’s un-American."

The transcript released by the White House press office, however, added an apostrophe, changing "supporters" to "supporter’s." The press office "conferred with the president" before making the edit, according to an internal email from the head of the stenographer's office obtained by the Associated Press.

The stenographer's office supervisor called the release of the altered transcript "a breach of protocol and spoliation of transcript integrity between the Stenography and Press Offices."

"If there is a difference in interpretation, the Press Office may choose to withhold the transcript but cannot edit it independently," the supervisor wrote in the internal email, adding, "Our Stenography Office transcript—released to our [distribution], which includes the National Archives—is now different than the version edited and released to the public by Press Office staff."

Biden’s "garbage" remark sparked a firestorm of criticism from both sides of the aisle, prompting the press office to request the stenographers quickly produce a transcript of the call, according to the email.

HARRIS IS PATHETIC CHEAT AND LIAR

Kamala Harris campaign suppressing, manipulating social media fact checks: Report
Timothy Frudd

A new report claims that Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has attempted to manipulate the “Community Notes” fact-checking feature on X, formerly Twitter, by suppressing negative content about Harris and amplifying negative content about former President Donald Trump.

According to The Federalist, the Harris campaign has directed political volunteers to block Community Notes on X that they “don’t like” and manipulate the social media platform’s fact-checking program. The Federalist claimed that one individual on a Harris campaign Discord server admitted that one of the campaign’s goals is to have political volunteers work to “block [Community Notes] we don’t like.”

The Federalist noted that before Tesla CEO Elon Musk purchased X, the social media platform engaged in censorship practices regarding certain content. Following Musk’s purchase of X, the social media platform launched Community Notes as a crowdsourced version of fact-checking.

According to The Federalist, an X user can become a Community Notes contributor by signing up and reaching a certain rating threshold. When a Community Note contributor shares a note, it can become publicly visible if it receives enough ratings from other contributors.

The Federalist said the Harris campaign’s X account frequently shares posts of Trump taken out of context, leading to multiple proposed Community Notes. The outlet gave an example of one situation where the KamalaHQ X account shared a clip of Trump taken way out of context, alongside the caption, “Trump on Americans who don’t support him: ‘We can’t play games with these people. These are people that are dangerous people … I’ve never seen anything like it.”

In the video clip, Trump specifically referenced President Joe Biden, former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and an American who leaked Israel’s plans to retaliate against Iran, not the American people.

The Federalist reported that an alleged Democrat staff member asked volunteers on a Discord channel, “Can folks rate notes as this as ‘not helpful’?” The outlet noted that the proposed Community Note on the Harris campaign’s post was not published despite Trump’s quote being taken out of context.

The Federalist also reported that there is a “twitter-community-notes” channel on Discord where “paid Democrat staffers are … writing dubious Community Notes on X to undermine GOP and Trump messaging. They then encourage volunteers to rate them positively.”

Additionally, The Federalist said that Harris campaign volunteers can complete a “Twitter (X) Community Notes Training” module that helps volunteers learn how to rate Community Notes and begin writing their own Community Notes.

DEMS DOING ELECTION FRAUD AGAIN!!!!

Voting malfunction highlights Harris' name with Trump selection, Kentucky county clerk confirms
Joseph MacKinnon

Footage showing a Kentuckian attempting to vote for President Donald Trump but having her selection switched to a vote for Kamala Harris went viral this week, prompting concerns about possible vote rigging as well as about potentially deceptive video edits — with some partisans prematurely concluding, "This never happened."

Laurel County Clerk Tony Brown (R) initially suggested Thursday that the apparent malfunction reported at the Laurel County courthouse annex in London could not be recreated but later confirmed the video was in fact genuine and that the glitch was replicable.

"The Attorney General's office has been to the vote center to check the device that has been shown across social media today," Brown noted on Facebook. "In full disclosure, after several minutes of attempting to recreate the scenario, it did occur."

'It went back into service.'

Brown indicated that the glitch took place when "some area in between the boxes" was touched. Although officials observed the issue reoccur on one occasion, Brown noted that "after that we tried for several minutes to do it again and could not."

The county clerk clarified that the ballot marking device seen in the video shows voters their selections for every race and issue, then confirms that they are satisfied before printing the ballot. If the printed ballot contains an error, voters can spoil it and receive a new one. However, Brown indicated Kentucky law permits only two spoiled ballots.

Brown shared a video where the same machine allegedly functioned "with no issues," indicating that while it was temporarily taken out of service until a representative from the state attorney general's office arrived to investigate, there have been no issues "since it went back into service."

'I hate that this has occurred here in Laurel County.'

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman stated, "The Kentucky Attorney General’s Department of Criminal Investigations (DCI) quickly responded to the complaint from Laurel County. Detectives have been in touch with the county clerk and recommended they change out the voting machine."

"All Kentucky voters can have confidence that our elections are secure and any potential issues will be addressed quickly," added Coleman.

Brown added that the voter whose selection was ostensibly switched from Trump to Harris ultimately "did cast her ballot which she said was correct."

"I hate that this has occurred here in Laurel County," continued Brown. "We strive to have accurate, secure and safe elections that we are proud to provide to our citizens."

Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams stressed shortly after Brown confirmed the glitch was replicated at least once that "there is no 'vote-switching,'" reiterating that the voter who took the video ended up with a ballot correctly printed "as marked for the candidate of her choice."

"Get your voting information from legitimate sources, not TikTok or cat turds," added Adams.

Adams appears to have been referencing a viral post of the malfunction video on TikTok, which has over 241,000 likes, as well as a post by Phillip Buchanan, the individual behind the popular Catturd account on X, that had netted over 2.3 million impressions by Friday morning.

Michon Lindstrom, Adams' spokeswoman, indicated the secretary's office "has received no complaints about 'vote switching' or other long-ago debunked rumors," reported the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Laurel County overwhelmingly voted for Trump over then-candidate Joe Biden in 2020, 23,237 to 4,475. Trump won the state by over 25 points that year.

Coleman implored Kentuckians to report suspected election law violations to his office's election fraud hotline at (800) 328-VOTE, noting, "Our dedicated team of investigators, prosecutors and support staff is working tirelessly to protect every vote."
