Many fiber artists think of a drum carder primarily as a tool for making batts, but its capabilities extend far beyond that. A drum carder is a remarkably versatile fiber preparation tool, capable of producing multiple styles of both woolen and semi-worsted preparations.

By changing techniques and approaches, a single handful of fleece can be transformed into several distinct preparations, each influencing the spinning process and the characteristics of the finished yarn. Understanding these different preparations allows spinners to better control loft, alignment, texture, and ultimately the performance of their yarn.

Exploring the full range of what a drum carder can do not only expands creative possibilities but also helps fiber artists make the most of the fleece and fibers they work with. Whether preparing fiber for airy woolen yarns, more organized semi-worsted spinning, or custom blends, the drum carder can be adapted to suit a wide variety of goals.

The more familiar you become with your drum carder, the more it reveals itself as an essential fiber preparation tool rather than simply a batt maker. With a little experimentation, it can open the door to new techniques, new yarns, and new ways of approaching the spinning process.

We'll be teaching Getting the Most Out of Your Drum Carder at Estes Park Wool Market this year, but if you can't make it to Colorado or weren't able to snag a seat in the sold-out class, our Fall 2025 Spin Off article is an excellent resource. Inside, you'll find many of the same ideas and techniques we share in class, helping fiber artists move beyond basic batts and unlock the full potential of their drum carders.

We combined all of the beautiful rainbow colors we’ve been carding from last year’s demo fiber to create a truly one-of-a-kind batt!

Each color was custom blended using only demo fiber from last year, and we added soft cotton clouds to complete our rainbow.

This batt is a colorful reflection of all the time we spent traveling across the country last year — demoing, teaching, vending, and spending time with so many of you along the way.

Our final giveaway post will be this Friday, May 29th, with all the details on how to enter. You’ll get to choose which batt you’d love to win!

Thank you for following along on this journey with us. We have many more festivals coming up this year, and we hope to see you in class or stop by and say hello at the booth.

Stay tuned for the official giveaway post!

Our next giveaway is happening this Friday, May 29th!

This is the first of two batt options for this month’s giveaway, and the second will be the reverse of this blend.

We love being part of this fiber community and are so grateful for the support you’ve shown us. These giveaways are our way of giving back while having fun creating something special for this channel.

Follow along for wooly sneak peeks, giveaway updates, and behind-the-scenes fiber fun. We’re so grateful for everyone who supports our small business and follows along on these wooly adventures with us!

What are ya'll working on?

05/22/2026

To most fiber artists, drum carders are basically wool-powered magic. Fiber goes in, a batt comes out, and somehow it all works.

In Exploring the Drum Carder, we pull back the curtain and get hands-on with the how and why behind the carder. We’ll talk history, woolen vs. worsted prep, handy fiber tools, and build four different batts throughout the day. Students will start by hand cranking before graduating to Electric Drive for the rest of class.

All materials, carders, and tools are provided. Just bring your curiosity and readiness to make a whole lot of fluff.

A new giveaway batt is on the drum carder. Follow along for wooly sneak peeks, blending chaos, and your chance to win!
