🖤 WICKED VINTAGE WEDNESDAY 🖤

Sometimes the mark underneath is every bit as interesting as the piece itself.

This week’s find is a beautifully reticulated Schumann Bavaria porcelain bowl, decorated with delicate florals, pierced latticework and gold detailing. But turn it over and you find the detail that really caught our attention:

“Germany — U.S. Zone.”

Schumann produced porcelain in Arzberg, Bavaria, with the company’s history stretching back to 1881. Following World War II, Bavaria became part of the American occupation zone—and Schumann pieces carrying this particular U.S. Zone backstamp are generally dated to the remarkably narrow period of 1946–1949.

That makes this ornate little bowl more than pretty vintage porcelain. It is a tangible survivor from the first few years of postwar Germany, when European factories were rebuilding and beginning production again after the devastation of the war.

Nearly 80 years later, its pierced porcelain, vivid flowers and gilded edge still look extraordinary.

History hiding in plain sight. That’s our kind of vintage.
