Today marks the midpoint of the roadtrip through Utah with 🌑🐺✨ Amy Maurine. I’ve done my best to pick some scenes from an overwhelmingly beautiful and exciting trip. This has been a longtime trip goal for me and every time we stop somewhere I just find out what I’d like to do and see if I come back. A big reminder of how much there is in this world and how precious the time we have experiencing it is.

The custom cherry dining table is complete and has been delivered. Had a ton of fun with the joinery on the contemporary base and the more traditional top blends perfectly in this updated sewickley home. I used a whole lot of different through mortises in this, including a nested piece to solidify the trestle to the legs. Check out my earlier posts to see the individual pieces and progression of the build.

Base finished in General Finishes water based black stain and satin water based polyurethane. Top finished with a blended stain and general finishes satin oil based polyurethane.

Book matched Redwood Burls with an Ash frame. They speak for themselves, but I will say that working with a piece like this grants a tangible reminder of what an incredible medium I get to work with. The amount of history, energy, evolution, and patient growth locked into a live edge piece of a species like this is astounding. It deserves presentation all its own. It does not need to be “useful” to humans. It does not need to have your morning coffee set upon it. It serves to remind you of the world you are a part of, and why now more than ever, it needs to be protected.

Next Saturday, the 9th I will be at Hartwood Acres with lots of new pieces! This will be my first time at this event and I’m very excited to see what it’s all about. First bowl I’ve turned in quite a while. Tried something new in filling grooves rather than wood burning. I definitely like the much cleaner look. The sheen is even more of a mirror finish than my amateurish photography allowed me to capture. Finished in the lovely Elixir Wax 1800 grit turning wax.

A rather large walnut cutting board. From one piece, taking advantage of the beautiful contrast of sapwood and heartwood. 14”x24”. This will be for sale at the first of 3 upcoming shows in September. I’ll share details on those shortly along with a sampling of more of the new pieces you can expect to see! Finished in the incomparable Macy’s Place cuttingboard finish.
