Hooked On Felt

Hooked On Felt Suzanne Higgs/ Hooked On Felt I am a felt artist, specializing in wearable fiber art. I am on a great adventure called feltmaking.

My felt hats are vibrant in color and sculpture in design, sometimes over dyed, sometimes not, sometimes simple straight lines, sometimes clay like in nature. My work is constantly evolving as I learn new things or attempt to stretch my imagination and skills, or as the wool leads. No matter how long my days on earth, I hope they are all filled with feltmaking, and learning daily. I teach felting,

both needle and traditional wet felting, as well as the nuno felting throughout the USA. There is great satisfaction in passing the knowledge, fascination, and passion forward. I am the original designer of the Needle Felt Hat Forms, so 12 years ago now. While I still teach with the needle felt forms, I most often use the traditional wet felt methods. My finished felts are available directly from me, at several local galleries, at fiber art shows, and on Etsy.com

I haven't made any felt recently, but have been busy in the dye pots, and spinning up some yarns. They are for a feltmaker and her upcoming classes. I am honored that she asked me to do this for her. I have forgotten how much I love dyeing fibers.
Did September arrive faster this year?

Spun up some of my hand dyed mohair. It's been a good bit since I've been at the spinning wheel, and it shows, but I enjoyed the process once again. There is something so peaceful about spinning.

Just a bit of new fiber to add to my stash from the Michigan Fiber Festival in Allegan, Michigan this weekend. Got to see some old friends, Barbara Lambrecht , Ann Neimi, Dawn Edwards, Nicole Gillies, Jenny Setser, Christee McNeil, Carol Wagner, and Suzanne Pufpaff. Many changes since I've been there. Really nice show. Love my new stash! Some for feltmaking, some for spinning. I was blessed to have 2 very good friends accompany me, Visnu Terleigh and Emmunah.

Vessel in Greens.
Unfortunately, the handles look blue-ish and the locks appear turquoise through my phone lens, even though they are in varying shades of greens. Does anyone know how to adjust that?
Vessel and stopper made from merino silk, flower from prefelt, locks are teaswater, handles are Finn wool.

This is an experimental bowl made with Lincoln long wool. It is a highly textured wool. I made it in white, but it took some dye to really show off it's lovely wavy curls. Certainly not a next to the skin wool, but Lincoln has it's place in this felters heart.
Have you made felt with Lincoln?

I know I said I wasn't going to teach again, but never say never, right? My friend Terri, Visnu Terleigh and I spent the day together with our puppies, and wool, all in my messy kitchen. Terri is a first time feltmaker and I believe that she has great potential to become highly skilled in pretty short order. The bowl/vessel was made of Merino wool. What do y'all think? Not bad for a first-timer, huh?
We were making dreads and we decided to wrap one around the top of the bird pod. Great day of friendship and collaboration!

This Bird Pod is made with corriedale wool, black, purple and lavender. The felt balls and entrance are made with hand dyed Finnish Wool. I've enjoyed the color play a great deal on this little pod. I had hoped to come up with something a bit more creative in the process, but it didn't happen. So, it is a simple Bird Pod, but it gave me joy, so it's a win.
