Hooked On Felt Suzanne Higgs/ Hooked On Felt I am a felt artist, specializing in wearable fiber art. I am on a great adventure called feltmaking.

My felt hats are vibrant in color and sculpture in design, sometimes over dyed, sometimes not, sometimes simple straight lines, sometimes clay like in nature. My work is constantly evolving as I learn new things or attempt to stretch my imagination and skills, or as the wool leads. No matter how long my days on earth, I hope they are all filled with feltmaking, and learning daily. I teach felting, both needle and traditional wet felting, as well as the nuno felting throughout the USA. There is great satisfaction in passing the knowledge, fascination, and passion forward. I am the original designer of the Needle Felt Hat Forms, so 12 years ago now. While I still teach with the needle felt forms, I most often use the traditional wet felt methods. My finished felts are available directly from me, at several local galleries, at fiber art shows, and on Etsy.com

It is with great hesitation that I post this Bird Pod. The journey we've been on together has been a bumpy ride, to be sure. Layout and felting took longer than usual, but some days are like that, so no biggie. Felting went well, but when it was well felted, it was no where near my vision. ABSOLUTE PANIC! So, I shared with a couple of friends who I trust to speak truth to me. The current photo is not what they saw, truly. Pamela A. MacGregor and I had a great laugh and she encouraged me to "play with it." So greatful that she talked me down from tossing it. I did play, reshape, stitch, mold, reposition, tug, twist, etc. It is done. Wild? Perhaps. Learning experience? Beyond!!!

Just a bit of stitch work at the encouragement of Elizabeth Armstrong, from Australia. First attempt. It was very relaxing. I think that I will try doing more stitch work, but in different ways. This seriously was just a first attempt, but it did give way to more ideas.

These photos are kind of out of order, but it is what it is. I had dyed some merino wool specifically for this project and was expecting a brilliant turquoise vessel. Alas, I used my initial layers in a dark grey Finn wool. As the felting occured, the grey migrated through the merino, leaving a very muted color. I am not unpleased with the results, but I was hoping for a brighter splash of color. Will I continue to use Finn as a base? Definitely I will, but perhaps only a little less initially. Finn gives incredible strength and i like that very much. Never stop learning.

I haven't made any felt recently, but have been busy in the dye pots, and spinning up some yarns. They are for a feltmaker and her upcoming classes. I am honored that she asked me to do this for her. I have forgotten how much I love dyeing fibers.
Did September arrive faster this year?
