I’ve recently been seeing a lot of chatter in the comments about what makes a “friendly game” of mahjong. Some are arguing that “friendly” means not following the rules, while others say groups are being unfriendly by using house rules that not all enjoy.
I think it’s easier to clarify “social” play versus “tournament-style” play, as I’ve seen friendly behavior at both types of tables. I think everyone should know how to play following the NMJL rules by the book, but also so love house rules for taking some of the pressure off. After all, we all came to this game so we could enjoy time around the table with the people we love!
What do you think constitutes a “friendly” game? What behaviors do you find “unfriendly?”
