this still-new-to-me journey of pursuing a business
has come with a lot of also-new-to-me challenges

luckily i have something to throw when i need a release
and something to clean when i need to feel centered

one of my favorite parts about this journey
is seeing what others are capable of.
a larger amount of clay, steady hands,
and a willingness to listen to the wheel.

mason threw this piece, and
while i helped guide the process where I could,
his hands created a beautiful form.
i’m really proud of how he met the weight of it.

the valentine's kit drop has me thinking
about what valentine's really means.
it was my papa's birthday and he
was a man who showed true unconditional love.

if i could make something to give to him today
it would probably be hobbit themed.

what would you want to make for a loved one?

kintsugi is the art of repairing broken pieces with care instead of hiding the cracks.

this mudbox is an introduction to that practice and can be done slowly, at home, with your hands.

it isn’t about fixing things.
it’s about honoring what’s been broken.

cozy is relative.
sometimes it’s a space heater, sweater, and cold slip.
sometimes it’s a hot chai and banjo stealing my seat.

what does cozy look like for you?

i hope to inspire others to learn about an ancient art.
each month i'd like to share a piece of clay history,
and this first one is close to home.
a ceramic tradition rooted right here,
in the Upper Mississippi Valley.

Oneota pottery was commonly used
for cooking and storage in prehistoric times.
they were large vessels, significantly larger
than previous forms found in the area.
my research into this form was relatively short
so i won't call myself an expert.
do you have a fun fact about Oneota pottery?

working with forms that echo this history
feels like listening more than inventing.
A reminder that clay has been
shaped, fired, and lived with
on this land for centuries.

my husband and i started the mud room
because we wanted a place where people could learn
and grow, a place to make real stuff.

art has always been where i go to get a little extra
space to breathe and think.
tinkering has always been where mason has gone to
get a little extra personal and thinking space.
we've both grown so much from learning how to make
real things and we'd love to share that passion with
others.

the mud room is how we'd like to create that space to
share.

don't forget;
your art doesn’t have to be perfect to be meaningful.

clay can crack, lean, soften, or collapse.
that’s the part that feels most honest.

What creative thing do you wish Platteville had?

12/25/2025

why Platteville?
i've been asked that here and there.
having not been born and raised in Platteville,
why stay in Platteville?

i’ve thought a lot about what it means
to build something in a small town.
and how community is central to a fulfilled life.

over the years we've found plenty of reasons to stay;
running into familiar faces, slowing down enough to talk
you really start to feel connected to others if you give it a try

the mud room started as clay and curiosity,
but it’s always been about place, too.
a place for learning, mistakes, growth,
and finding a safe space in a digital age.

making art isn’t always clean or perfect.
most days it looks like a half-baked mess of a clay cake.
between cracks, dents, and smears it can be easy to get overwhelmed.

but this is the part i want to share.
these moments remind us creativity is a practice, not a performance.
it's a good reminder to be kind and patient with yourself when trying to grow.

hello, we wanted to officially introduces ourselves!

i’m Kaylene, and i’ve been working with clay at home as a way to make more space for myself in the world. space to breathe, to think, and to grow. this page is called the mud room, and it’s where i’ll be sharing my space as it grows.

with the help of my husband Mason, our long-term dream is to create a small, welcoming art space here in platteville. for now, i’m sharing what i’m learning, the mess along the way, and some take-home air dry clay kits we’ve been developing.

if you like creative hobbies, cozy projects, or learning something new, we're really glad you’re here! we hope you stay a while.
