For the last year I've been growing Tulsi Basil. If you know me personally, you know I'm deep into plant medicine and how it works, though I'm so reverent toward plants that I rarely get around to actually using any of them. Tulsi had been calling to me for a few years before, and I would buy a tea or something and never get around to actually using it.

I was gifted my Big Mama plant as a baby from Alex at Grateful Acres , and I went into it without any research, just intuition and attention. She turned out to be an easy teacher. Growing her has been nothing but joy, and every time she puts out a little flower, I get to pick it and eat it right there. It's subtly relaxing, just enough to notice, it's considered an adaptogen, good for stress, sort of similar to ashwagandha but way more mild and easier tolerated.

Toward the end of last season, she started to decline. I hadn't cut the flowers back to stop her from going to seed. I understood intuitively that's how it works with plants, but I was too caught up in watching her bloom to intervene. Patience showed up late for me here, the sort you only learn once you've let something go too far and have to sit with it instead of fixing it fast.

By the time I realized what was happening, I had to act. I took cuttings, reluctantly at first. If you know me, you also know I went to school for horticulture and agricultural studies, so I probably should have caught this earlier. Still, I went in blind, cutting small pieces at a time and setting them in water to see what would root. Now I've got a whole batch of her babies.

I'd love to share them, but only with folks I know will actually care for them. If that's you, give me a buzz.

Cabinetry. Built-ins. Kitchens. Mudrooms. Staircases. Bars. Mantels. Benches. Outdoor furniture. Signs. All hand-cut joinery, built from locally sourced Pennsylvania hardwoods.

Working wood is close to meditation for me. There's a rhythm to it, a life in it, and it can be a bit of a fight sometimes. Nineteen steps into a twenty step process, one wrong move can put you back ten. Sometimes more, so whenever a piece comes out right I can almost feel the cost it took to get there.

This run of white oak and ash benches came out right. Sturdy, comfortable, and each one holds together on a hand cut castle joint.

Grateful to Hanna's Farm Market for keeping our work out there. A few of these benches are over there now, and more to come, if you want to sit on one yourself.

Throwback to the time we built a slide from the upstairs kids' room straight down to the playroom below. Custom work like this is our favorite kind. If you can dream it up, we can probably build it. Black Diamond Timber & Joinery Co.

Finished a set of chairs earlier this week, texted the customer they were ready and she sent me her address. In the Poconos half the streets are named after trees. Hers was White Oak. I've been having a white oak month, and oh boy, God can be kind of funny like that sometimes. White oak frame, cedar tops, walnut plugs. Every board starts as rough lumber, we do it all ourselves. These are available and we can build them in any local wood species, along with outdoor tables, indoor tables, dining sets, and whatever else you need built.

Well, we did it. Black Diamond Timber & Joinery Co. officially has a home on the internet. Come take a look at Poconowoodwork.com,

We have a lot of photos to share, past work and present, and we'll be putting up general pricing as we go. This has been a long time coming and we're really excited to have a space that can showcase all of the beautiful things we've had the pleasure to create. Thank you all so much. It means more than you know.

There is something in these mountains that people drive hours to be near. We think it's the trees. We live among them, we learn from them, and when one comes down we make sure it becomes something that lasts. The forests here are old and generous and they deserve to be treated that way. Round two of Grandma's Cutting Boards is done. ••

Maple on the outside, walnut on the inside, with two purple heart stripes running through it. Flip it over and you'll find two purple heart dots on the bottom, marking it as the second in a set of three.

Cutting boards aren't really my thing, I'm a furniture guy at heart. But every once in a while a project comes along that's a welcomed break from the grind, and this set has been exactly that.

More to come.

Built this one for my Grandma. She has spent more of her life in that kitchen than anywhere else on earth, and her current cutting board has probably seen thirty years of Sunday dinners. This is the first of three - hard maple, dense, tight-grained, God's gift to kitchen work honestly - rounded corners, little rubber feet, and a little purpleheart dot pressed into the center so it always knows its place in the set.

Before I made a single cut she walked me through every cutting board she owns. All 15 of them. Picked each one up, turned it over, told me what she loved and what she'd change. I just listened. That kind of patience, sitting still, paying attention, caring enough to get it right, I learned that from her. Somewhere between a lifetime of meals and thirty years on the same board.

That's what I'm trying to put into this wood. Hope you love them Grandma.

Mountain lodge is the look this year and that's sort of how we've always done it.

These chairs went out to Hanna's Farm Market this week and you can go test them out with a cold drink in hand. That's what handmade feels like when it lands somewhere it belongs.

The chairs come in three tiers. Pressure treated pine at $110 for the workhorse build. Western red cedar in the middle for natural rot resistance and warm grain. Poly lumber at the top end up to $435, recycled, maintenance free, the last outdoor chair you will ever buy.

But we do not just build chairs. We build the whole lodge.

Live edge coffee and dining tables. Raised cedar planter boxes with legs that look like furniture not lumber. Floating shelves in live edge oak or walnut. Entryway benches with shoe storage built to actually hold up. Charcuterie boards, garden boxes, sideboards, custom built-ins, harvest tables long enough to seat your whole family.

If you have a second home up here, a deck that needs something real, a kitchen that needs an island, or a garden that needs a planter that does not rot out in two seasons. Message us.

Drop a 🪵 in the comments for pricing on anything you see here. DMs are open.

Exotic wood is cool, But we still don't really mess with it.

Went to Woodcraft for the first time today. Picked up these two pieces of purpleheart for gifts and they're honestly stunning. But walking around that store kind of reminded me why we do things the way we do.

A little accent piece of something exotic on a build can be just right sometimes. But basing a whole business around lumber harvested God knows where under God knows what conditions and shipped halfway around the world just isn't us.

We use local timber. Pennsylvania hardwoods. We know where it came from, who cut it, and the money stays here. Fair trade isn't just something printed on a coffee cup, it's supposed to mean that the people that helped bring that cup of coffee to you, weren't suffering to do it. It applies to wood too, it applies to everything.

The purpleheart is beautiful. The walnut from down the road is the real thing.

Pocono homes should have Pocono wood!
