We love 101 history!!

He spent a lifetime preparing for his role.

Abraham Lincoln stood before a crowd at Gettysburg and spoke for barely two minutes. His 271 words would outlive the war itself.
On November 19, 1863, Lincoln traveled to Pennsylvania to dedicate the Soldiers' National Cemetery, four months after the Union victory at Gettysburg.
He was not even the main speaker.
Edward Everett, one of America's most famous orators, spoke first for roughly two hours.
Then Lincoln stood up.
His address contained only 10 sentences and 271 words.
It was so brief that a photographer reportedly did not have enough time to prepare his camera before Lincoln finished and returned to his seat.
But the length of the speech was not what mattered.
Lincoln used those few minutes to give the Civil War a deeper meaning.
He connected America's founding ideals to the struggle over freedom and equality, presenting the war as a test of whether a nation built on those principles could survive.
His final promise became one of the most recognized statements about democracy in American history.
A speech that took only a few minutes to deliver became one of the defining moments of Lincoln's presidency.
Everett had spoken for thousands of words.
Lincoln needed only 271.
The longer speech was forgotten by most people.
The short one became history.

Love this

It’s funny how a tiny building can stop you in your tracks. This little jail is the kind of roadside stop that makes you think about how different life was when a town only needed one room to handle its trouble.

The barred window, the plain concrete, the whole no-nonsense setup says plenty without trying hard. You can almost picture the deputy, the drunks, and the stories folks told about who spent a night there.

Places like this don’t need polishing to matter. They just sit there and remind you how plain, rough, and real a lot of small-town history was.
