Why do shells have spines?

Not just to look cool, although that is a pretty excellent side effect. ๐Ÿš

Depending on the species, spines can help protect the animal, keep it from sinking into soft sand or mud, help it stay stable in moving water, or even provide a place for other sea life to grow and blend in.

Murex, Spondylus, Guildfordia yoka, and Imperial Delphinula all have spiny forms, but they do not all use those spines in the same way.

This week, weโ€™re looking at the survival stories behind some of the oceanโ€™s most dramatic shells.

The smallest shells can hold the biggest stories. ๐Ÿš

A tiny shell may look easy to overlook, but each one has its own shape, texture, pattern, and journey through the ocean. That is part of what makes tiny shell collections so much fun.

Save & share with your fellow shell lovers!

How do we find shells this small?

Honestly โ€” through years of buying collections, estate lots, and sourcing from people who've spent a lifetime gathering. ๐Ÿ”

The tiniest, most perfect specimens don't usually wash up on the beach. They come from collectors who knew what they were looking at. That's the hunt โ€” knowing where to look and who to ask.
