There's something about a sea urchin that feels like it belongs in an old curiosity cabinet. πŸ—„οΈ

Like someone a long time ago picked it up off a beach, couldn't believe how perfect it was, and just... kept it. Put it on a shelf. Showed everyone who came over.

That's kind of what we do too, honestly. We just have a website now. πŸ˜„

Some things don't change. 🌊

Not all urchins have the same kind of spines. πŸ¦”

The Pine Tree Urchin (Psychocidaris oshimai) gets its name from those short, clustered spines that look just like the branches of a tiny pine tree. It's compact β€” about 3" across β€” but it's one of those pieces that makes people stop and look twice.

Rare, quirky, and genuinely cool. The kind of thing that earns a spot in any serious coastal collection.

Our shop's social page on Facebook is monetized. We don't make much each month, and yes, we went 'over-budget', but we're so excited to pass these out! We decided to use that monetization for God's good! Every interaction, like, & share means more than you know. Planting seeds...

People have been making things with sea urchin shells for a long time β€” and honestly it makes sense. πŸ¦”πŸŽ¨

The test is already so interesting that it almost feels like it's asking to be part of something. Artists cast them in resin. Crafters wire-wrap them into pendants. People paint them, hang them in wreaths, set them into framed shadow boxes, turn them into ornaments.

There's something about working with a natural object that already has this much structure to it β€” you're not starting from scratch, you're just adding to what's already there.

We love seeing what people make. If you've ever used a shell in a project, drop it in the comments β€” we genuinely want to see. πŸ‘‡

This is the test β€” the actual shell of a sea urchin, once the spines are gone. πŸ¦”

Up close it's almost hard to believe something made this. Five perfect sections, hundreds of tiny perforations, all completely symmetrical.

Okay so fun fact β€” the spiky part of a sea urchin that everyone pictures? That's not actually the shell. πŸ¦”

The shell is called the "test" β€” that smooth, geometric globe underneath all the spines. And it is wild how perfect it is up close. Five-point symmetry, like a little star built into the structure. Nature just doing its thing.

Urchins have been around for over 450 million years. Older than dinosaurs. They move using their spines β€” slowly creeping across the ocean floor β€” and they're found in oceans all over the world, from tide pools to deep water.

When the spines are gone, what's left is one of the most beautiful natural objects you can hold in your hand. We think so, anyway. 🐚

Save this one β€” good stuff to know! πŸ‘‡

πŸ¦” Spotlight: Caledonia Urchin with Spines

Those long, dramatic spines stop people in their tracks β€” and honestly, they should.

This one's been on our shelf and it gets more attention than almost anything else we have out. There's something about the texture and scale of it that just works in a coastal display. Pair it with driftwood, coral, or let it stand alone β€” it holds its own either way.

Natural, striking, and the kind of piece you don't forget.

This week we're shining a light on sea urchins πŸ¦” β€” and yes, that's literally one of the ways we style them. πŸ˜„

A few of our favorite things to do with them:

πŸ’‘ Put a light under one. Set a small LED puck under a urchin and the pattern and colors pop like you've never seen before

β›„ Stack them like snowmen. Big one on the bottom, smaller ones on top. Same species, different species, doesn't matter β€” it just looks really cool and shows off how much variation there is in size and color.

🌿 Stick an air plant in one. The opening makes the perfect little vessel. No soil, no fuss, and it looks like it belongs there.

We sell the urchins. The creativity is all yours. πŸ™‚
