First (and probably the last) custom carved seat on a Series 2 chair. It is part of the last order I crafted in my 25 year run at my shop at the old Blue Star Match factory on Commercial Street. Can’t help but feel a bit of nostalgia as we pack it up for the move to Scarborough. Stay tuned.

The New Standard for Sustainable Furniture Design

Since 1993, Green Design Furniture Company has grown a national following of devoted collectors and owners of the designs of Douglas Green. Since our founding we have been pioneering a patented method of manufacturing furniture that was developed to exploit the inherent strength of the wood alone itself to create an indestructable and sustainable way to produce furniture. The process patent is for a system of interlocking joinery that allows the parts to slide and lock into each other, using full-length dovetailed connections. This innovative system, invented by Douglas Green, virtually eliminates the use of screws, nuts, bolts, and other fasteners. Each component is machined with exacting precision—in increments of 5/1000th of an inch—until the full-length dovetails slide into place. Our self-locking joinery also allows for the seasonal movement of the wood without warping, distorting the shape, or loosening the structure. Dispensing with fasteners allows our furniture to have a simple, elegant form and the smallest carbon footprint imaginable imaginable for solid wood furniture manufacturing.

We have created this Group for you, our collectors and devotees, to learn about new designs, newsworthy events and to share your own experiences, thoughts and questions about a small company with a big idea.
