What did Halloween look like before costumes?

More fortune telling than trick or treating. By the late 1800s, Halloween parties featured games like bobbing for apples. The first to get one was said to marry first. Next you'd peel an apple in a long strip, toss it, and read the initials it formed on the floor, which was supposed to be the initials of your future spouse.

What was Hawthorne Blvd called before 1933?

Asylum Avenue. The street was named for Dr. James Hawthorne, who opened Oregon's first mental asylum nearby in 1861. Residents eventually found Asylum Avenue too grim, so it became Hawthorne Avenue in 1888, and finally Hawthorne Boulevard in 1933.

Why do they call it depression glass?

For the era, not the mood. It was mass produced from the late 1920s through the 1940s, and some pieces were literally given away free with flour, soap, or movie tickets to get glassware into households during hard economic times.
