Heather and Kim here (the ghosts of Christmas past? 😅) to share a little update with you!

We loved welcoming you all into our retail shop the past few holiday seasons, and we sure do miss your beautiful faces since closing in July! And… we are happy to report that we have continued creating and crafting, and that you can still “shop small” with us, as we each now have an online store! Heather is now pouring her award-winning non-toxic soy candles as — she works out of her tiny 90sf home studio in the Foster-Powell area. Every month, she drops a few limited-edition candle scents and vessels, in addition to her year-round and seasonal candle lines. She even offers crackling wood wick candles!

You’ll also find other locally made and handcrafted goodies in her online store, which make great gifts and stocking stuffers — from artisanal chocolate, hot cocoa tins and coffee flavor cubes to bath bombs, candle accessories, greeting cards and more. Plus, you can choose free local pickup at checkout to avoid shipping costs!

Kim has happily continued her small-batch yarn and wool dyeing, and has finally taken her beloved hobby and given it wings!

HEATHER | FIRE + FOLK 🔥

I started pouring non-toxic soy candles 9 years ago in my kitchen, and I still love the art and science of the creative process so much. I’m happy to continue my candle journey from my new tiny home studio, on a smaller scale. I’ll still be stocking some of my favorite local stores, and my online shop will be launching in October. You’ll recognize some best-selling scents, and I’m also very excited to be blending some new ones that I’m totally in love with!

My intention with FIRE + FOLK is to cultivate cozy kinship through the alchemy of fragrance + fire, with scents rooted in nature and inspired by life in the Pacific Northwest. I am proud to continue using pure, locally-sourced soy wax, essential oils, clean fragrance oils and new recycled and sustainable vessels.

I hope to bring a little PNW magic into every home through beautifully scented candlelight, while sparking moments of warmth, joy, kinship, and connection. xo, Heather

KIM | MOSS & FERN 🧶

I dyed my first skein of yarn two years ago. It was burnt, blotchy, and wholly mine. Dyeing yarn was always something I wanted to do. I finally gave it a go and fell in love!

I swore for *years* that it was just a hobby. I wasn’t trying to start ANOTHER business venture with my precious little free time! But I just kept feeling the pull... I started dyeing yarn, then wool top, then I quickly took up spinning. Now Moss and Fern is two years old, and I still love it with every bit of my soul.

While I am sad to be leaving my WMW community, I’m so excited to finally share my wool with the world. My first collection launches in November! I can’t wait to see what you make with it! xo, Kim

We had the great pleasure of checking out 168 customers this weekend, and our shelves are pretty bare except for a few odds and ends. Thank you SO much for showing up for us and helping us go out strong! 💪🏻

We enjoyed talking and connecting with you, petting your cute dogs, and enjoying one last weekend together in the shop as a team. It was many emotions at once, but more than anything, it was gratitude — gratitude for these past few years in this beautiful space, for all the fun memories, and for this incredible community. Our heart are full. ☺️

We’re taking a week to rest our bodies and minds, and then we’ll be back with more details on larger items / equipment / supplies we’ll be selling.

As a longtime candlemaker, I am so proud and honored that my hand-poured candles have been voted BEST CANDLES IN PORTLAND by readers of ! I’ve been crafting non-toxic, vegan candles for about 9 years, so I am happy that people love them as much as I love making them! 😊

While we are closing our biz (our last day open is Sunday 7/28), I will continue pouring my candles as from a tiny home studio on a smaller scale. It’s something I am still incredibly passionate about and love doing… I just need to do it on a level that is more sustainable for my chronically-ill and disabled body, without all the stress and pressure of immense overhead costs and a physical retail store.

The end of an era… 🥹💜

Today, Logan and I poured our very last batch of candles for Wild Mountain Wax Co. It was incredibly bittersweet! ✨

I started out pouring candles 9 years ago in tiny batches in our tiny kitchen, then moved to a backyard shed… then, 3 years ago, we poured our first candles in our Foster Rd studio space. It’s been a beautiful journey! We have hand-poured thousands of non-toxic, vegan candles in this very special space, and have been so grateful to have them in more than 50 indie gift shops, natural groceries, and resorts across the country. We have poured hundreds for local businesses and for weddings and events. We’ve had a great run, filled with many challenges, but also so much joy.

We will not be restocking any scents from here out, so be sure to stock up on your favorites before they’re gone!

Shop online through July 19th, or shop in-store through July 28th! Everything in our retail store is 15% off through the weekend (in store only).

THANK YOU for supporting our dream over these past 5 years. We can truly say we have given it everything we have, and we have no regrets. We are so grateful!

Our awesome production assistant, Logan, blended and poured his first batch of soy candles today! He did great! 👏🏻

Logan joined our team in August of last year, and has done everything from wicking and labeling candle jars to working our retail shop. He’s a student at Portland Community College, a talented budding artist, and is so much fun to work with! His contagious smile and laugh will be so missed when we close. Thank you, Logan, for all your awesome work and positive attitude… we’re so grateful to have you on our team! ☺️

Absolutely obsessed with this gorgeous photo by ! Our Oregon Coast candle was inspired by my favorite place along the coast: Yachats.

Yachats is nicknamed the Gem of the Oregon Coast, and it’s true! It’s jagged coastline is dominated by stunning black basalt rock, the result of lava flows 50 million years ago. I love walking the paved 804 Trail that begins at Smelt Sands, one of my favorite places in the world.

At both Smelt Sands and nearby Thor’s Well, the Pacific Ocean crashes against basalt rock, sending enormous sprays of sea and salt into the air in geyser-like display. (Swipe to see photos I took there earlier this week!)

These spots are pure magic to me, and I wanted to capture the smell of that intoxicating sea spray.

So, our Oregon Coast candle begins with a base of sea salt and tonka, topped with subtle floral notes of freesia, fresh green leaves and ozonic top notes.

For me, it’s the coast of Yachats in an amber jar. It’s also consistently our best-selling candle scent! 🌊🌊🌊

Hi, friends! We are incredibly grateful for each of you. We want to share our hearts and some news with you today. 🤎

We (Heather + Kim) never wanted to have to write this letter — but, like so many other small, local businesses, it’s time.

After 5 years in business, we are closing Wild Mountain Wax Co. — both our candle studio and retail shop. We have poured every ounce of ourselves into this business, but life has thrown us every unimaginable curveball, and it’s no longer sustainable to continue.

During our 5 years in business, we have overcome insurmountable challenges coming at us from every angle, from health issues, to personal loss, and the rising costs of doing business through the pandemic. We have battled everything and still produced thousands of candles, hosted Sip & Shop events, and have been a home to makers from all over the Pacific Northwest! We have shared laughs and tears with so many of you, and created a community that we are truly proud of. Now, we need to shift our focus to our bodies, our mental health, and our families.

While we grieve the end of this chapter in our lives, we also know this is the right decision for us.

We will close our doors at the end of July. We’re excited to participate in our final Foster Summer Soiree on June 22nd (details coming soon) and we hope you will come support us. We need to sell as much of our inventory as possible in order to set ourselves up for success in our next chapter, so please come stock up on your favorite goodies!

We are SO grateful for you showing up for us over the years! It has been an honor to be a part of this community, to support more than 160 makers in our shop, to donate over $7,000 to worthy local causes, and to work with our incredible stockists. It’s been such a beautiful journey.

We are makers at heart, and we will continue to create! Kim will continue her beautiful fiber arts .and.fern.fiber.studio and Heather will continue pouring non-toxic soy candles from a tiny home studio as . Feel free to follow our personal creative journeys!
