A sneak peek of our Hood River residence from a site visit last month. It’s hard to believe that just a couple of years ago this project was little more than an excavation site and a set of drawings.

From the beginning, the goal for the design was to foreground the intense vistas, mercurial weather patterns, and unmatched drama of the Columbia River Gorge as part of everyday living. Standing at the grand floor-to-ceiling windows, it was deeply rewarding to experience the house in the midst of weather that might otherwise be considered gray or unremarkable, but which here only heightened the raw beauty of the landscape and the building’s connection to it.

One of the most gratifying moments in a project’s lifespan is walking through it with the people who helped bring it to life: the client who initiates the vision and ultimately inhabits the space; the general contractor and tradespeople who translate design intent into built form; and the consultants whose specialized expertise helps resolve challenges both visible and unseen.

Much appreciation and admiration goes to , .scott, and the entire team at . Their dedication and craftsmanship have been instrumental in navigating every challenge and bringing this extraordinary project to life.

Looking forward to sharing more soon.

“The client brief for El Capitola was a dream assignment. As someone fascinated by how the automobile has historically shaped architecture and city planning, this project allowed me to think deeply about the connection between car design and the modern American home.”

We’re pleased to share that El Capitola has been recognized by the jury with an Honorable Mention in Single-Family Residential Design. It’s an honor to have this project acknowledged at a global level alongside so many inspiring works from around the world.

Designed for a lifelong car enthusiast, El Capitola is both a home and a gallery, devoting more than half of its square footage to a private car museum housing an extraordinary collection of restored custom classic automobiles. Named after one of its resident icons—a fully customized 1957 Chevy—the house draws on mid-century America’s fascination with streamlining, innovation, and cutting-edge design. El Capitola is an homage to the bravado and optimism of Jet Age car culture, reinterpreted through the clean, understated framework of a contemporary single-family residence, channeling the pride, excitement, and enduring allure of these masterpieces of engineering.

The Architecture MasterPrize (AMP) is a global platform celebrating excellence in architecture, interior design, landscape design, and architectural product design.

Looking for a gift for the design lover in your life? The history buff? The friend with a bare coffee table?

founder Daniel Kaven’s Architecture of Normal: The Colonization of the American Landscape (, 2022) is an engrossing and visually stunning 456-page journey through the American West, told through bright, original artwork, rare historic photographs, timelines, and a powerful blend of personal and cultural narrative.

Kaven traces how patterns of human movement and evolving transportation technologies have shaped the American landscape we know today. From the structures of Indigenous tribes in the Southwest to Sears & Roebuck kit homes, from the routes of the Pony Express to Henry Ford’s assembly line plants, from the libraries of Andrew Carnegie to the launch pads of Jeff Bezos, explores the relentless push toward the Frontier—and the built artifacts that remain, both on the ground and in our collective imagination.

A beautiful, compelling read, and a coffee-table showstopper.
