Do you know where your coffee comes from?

Please don’t tell me the name of your grocery store, or the country. Please don’t even say Trades of Hope (or other mail order source if you dare!)

Do you know, specifically, the plantation?
Do you know the people involved in the process?

We sell coffee that’s been grown, harvested, and roasted at La Azotea in Jocotenango, Guatemala. I’ve wandered among some of the 50,000 coffee plants on the property, all grown without chemicals. I’ve met Flavia, one of the country’s leading roasters, and watched as she continually checked the quality of the coffee as she roasted it.

You might not be able to visit a coffee plantation any time soon, but you can still know where your coffee comes from when you get it from me.

Many of us have made a decision to purchase anything from Shein and Temu. Yes they’re cheap but, to be brief, they are the epitome of fast fashion. And that’s before you look into their lack of transparency, intellectual theft, and human rights violations.

So it’s somewhat horrifying to learn that Shein has bought a stake in the so-called “ethical” brand Everlane.

Shein is acquiring Everlane for a reported $100 million, signalling a growing push to anchor itself within Western fashion IP and expand its presence.

“I’m not paying that much!”

“I can get that cheaper in Walmart.”

I hear these statements often when I’m a vendor at an event. So, do Fair Trade products cost more than regular ones?

The answer is: 💥 NO 💥

🛒 Shop your local ALDI store and you’ll find plenty of Fair Trade products on the shelves, including coffee and chocolate.

💄 Drug store brand E.l.f. Cosmetics now makes its products in Fair Trade certified factories. I’m gradually switching out my higher priced makeup for e.l.f and have noticed no difference except to my wallet.

👜 The new Bourne Beach Tote from Trades of Hope is $72. A comparable “designer” beach tote I found online is currently on “sale” for over twice as much!

🙂 Fair Trade retailers tend to purchase direct from Artisan groups, therefore cutting out the need for middle men (and women) who want their percentage.

Plus, many non-consumable items are handmade using traditional techniques, using sustainable or recycled materials. The result is a truly unique design.
