Here is an hour of the job nobody films: the moisture test.

This is the Pacific Northwest. Concrete slabs hold more moisture than people think, and if you lay flooring over a slab that is too wet, you get cupping, adhesive failure, and sometimes mold, months after we are gone. So before a single plank goes down, we test. If the number is wrong, we fix the cause first. That is the difference between a floor that lasts and a callback.

Dark floors do hide crumbs and pet food. What they show, in bright unforgiving detail, is dust, pet hair, lint, and every footprint. Very light floors have the opposite problem. The tones that actually hide daily life best are the mid-range, warmer browns and honeyed oaks with a little grain to break things up.

Myth: a floating floor is the cheap, flimsy option.

Modern click-lock plank is not the peel-and-stick of 10 years ago. Done right, it handles moisture better than glue-down in our damp PNW winters, and it can be lifted and repaired one board at a time. Cheap looking and cheap built are not the same thing.
