Willow & Mabel Garden Co.

Willow & Mabel Garden Co. Willow & Mabel Garden Co I am an English transplant living outside of Seattle, USA. Well, it did not beat us. I am very nervous and very excited too.

For most of my life I have enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers but just as a hobby and a way to relax after a day at the office. A couple of years ago, my husband and I and our two teenage boys moved from our beautiful self-built house into a 100 year old dilapidated farm house on 5 acres of land. I think that everyone thought that we were crazy and had taken on a DIY project bigger than even m

y carpenter husband could tackle. My husband and two teenage boys, with help from lots of friends, transformed that dilapidated farm house into a wonderful, welcoming home that we are all so happy living in. Last year I was flicking though a magazine and came across an article about two women who gave up their office jobs and followed their dream of becoming farmer-florists. I read, and re read this article and thought how I would love to do that. The magazine article floated around my head for weeks thinking about it. I mentioned it to my husband, who never shy’s away from a challenge and he said “what are you waiting for? Do it!”

So here I am making my first tentative steps towards achieving my dream. The fear of failure keeps churning in my stomach, but as my husband says, “what is the worst that can happen? – We will have a lovely flower garden and green house.” I cannot afford to dive into this as a full time project but I am going to make baby steps towards that goal with the help and support of my family. So that is how Willow & Mabel Garden Co. started – which is lovingly named after our two Pygmy Goats! Now you can follow my muddy footsteps down this road & see what happens. As I was told recently – “Never die not knowing”.

These past few weekends have been so busy for me with weddings and events. Today I found myself alone on the property for 30 minutes. The dogs were sleeping. In total silence I put this together. I think it is the most relaxing thing I have done in a while. Thinking about nothing else but the flowers in front of you and their placement.

I did have a list of dahlias in this arrangement and then I had a glass of w**e so the list went out the window.

But I know there is Rock Run Ashley, Ferncliff Dolly, Verrones 14-30, Chateau De La Bourdaisiere and a few others 🤔

It is the small things…sometimes I think that the world is crumbling around us but then I see this butterfly on the zinnias and I have hope. I just stood and watched it work away. This year I have seen more butterflies in the field than I usually do, which has to be a good sign surely?

A whole lot of raspberry from the field, which does not include any of the berry variety. Which I am actually thankful for as I think we picked well over 60lbs of raspberries this summer and a large amount of them is in the freezer waiting for me to do some baking….so that may take a while.

Dahlias here include:
Kelti Rose
Ka Rosie Jo
RM Raspberry Twinkle
Burfoot desert rose
Rhubarb & Custard

The zinnias are off the charts right now. Are they in color blocks? Absolutely not! And I love them all the more for that. It has been hard to decide which is my favorite this year but I think it has to be “Little Flower Girl” from Erin Benzakein - Floret - it is perfect to use in weddings.

And Dolly we will miss you. Such a wonderful human. Smart, funny, generous, incredible song writer and her sense of humor! …we should try a little harder to be like Dolly.

I am the first to admit that my taste in dahlias has changed over the years. I used to fawn over the light pink and peach ones. Now I am all about the deep smoky colors. Maybe it is an age thing?!!

This was a very quick faffing with flowers as honestly I am exhausted. Lots of weddings and field work at the moment. It was nice however to be out in the field, quietly pottering around choosing my favs.

Today we have Dahlias - Night Silence, River Merle Raspberry Twinkle, Smokey Gal and then some bits and bobs from the field.

There can never be enough violas. These lovelies are going to be tucked in amongst the wedding flowers this weekend. You can guarantee that if I provide wedding florals for you, somewhere amongst all the hustle and bustle you will find a viola or pansy.

I am loving this soft buttery yellow violas. I have no idea what variety they are but they have my heart. 💛
