Back in Brazil, exploring two sides of the same practice.

Photo Gilda Midani

Handbuilding ceramic furniture and totems in Porto Alegre with Escola Alma Objetos Cerâmicos …

… then going ancestral in Araras with Gilda Midani ; foraging clay, building a kiln, and firing until dark.

Photo Gilda Midani

Immensely grateful to Marina Carvalho and Gilda Midani for welcoming me into their spaces, and to Leila Buffa for so generously sharing her knowledge of wild clay and kiln building.

Above all, thank you to everyone who joined the workshops; for your trust, curiosity, and willingness to create and explore alongside us.

Totems in progress.

I often stay with these forms for a bit before deciding they’re finished. I’ll stack them one way, leave them, come back days later and rearrange them. Sometimes a new piece appears. Sometimes an existing one changes completely.

She’s out and ready to be glazed.

This piece is the result of something I talk about often: mistakes along the process, in this case, a collapse.

When it happens, there’s a brief moment of panic. Then the challenge kicks in. I become more interested in solving the problem than frustrated by it.

What I enjoy most is knowing the piece will become something I never would have planned on my own.

She’s a Brussels Griffon. I recently learned that the smooth coat Brussels is originally called Petit Brabançon.
