Mud Makers has enjoyed a close relationship with the Art Hive since it began. The Hive is a large, long space with many individual art studio rooms, an art gallery and larger spaces for meetings and events. Because the Hive is in an old building, fire code prohibits anything fire-related, so no pottery kilns, but networking and support channels have been active between the Hive and Mud Makers from the beginning.

Late this month will bring MudFest, a collaboration between the Art Hive Foundation and Mud Makers, an invitational show showcasing the work of 20 local potters and clay artists. The show opens on Thursday February 26 and will be up till March 24. The opening reception will be held on February 27 (with the 4th Friday Art Walk), 5-8pm.

Featured in the show will be fine-art ceramics, functional work, and demonstrations both on the potter’s wheel and in hand-building by some of the featured artists and other local ceramicists. This collaborative event highlights one of Prescott’s best qualities, namely the great goodwill that exists between the many arts organizations in our town. Rather than competing with each other for funds and patrons, artists, galleries and art-centered venues all actively promote one another.

“Carving and color are what define my work. In this hands-on workshop, I’ll teach two of my favorite surface techniques: sgraffito and modern Mishima.” —Sue Sprague

Sue will begin with a brief overview of both techniques, using examples from her own pottery to demonstrate how each approach influences surface, line, and depth. She will then demonstrate both methods, sharing practical design strategies, carving tips, and problem-solving techniques developed through years of working with clay.

Participants will start by practicing on a leather-hard clay tile using guided design ideas. From there, Sue will lead you as you carve and decorate two leather-hard pieces that you bring to the workshop. There will be ample time to explore and practice both techniques.

This workshop is designed to provide real, usable skills—not just a demonstration. You’ll leave with finished work in progress, a clear understanding of both processes, and the confidence to continue carving and developing your own surface style.

During this one-day workshop, participants will learn to create two beautiful hand-built mugs using slabs of clay. Finished mugs will be bisque-fired.

Our instructor, Karen vanBarneveld, has a long history in ceramics. She says,

I’ve crafted hundreds of these charming mugs and still treasure the few I kept—especially when serving tea to guests. Their playful shape carries a touch of personality and attitude, almost as if they’re saying, “Here I am!”

In this workshop, you’ll discover simple, approachable techniques to build mugs quickly, while leaving room to infuse your own unique flair over time.

Come shape a set for loved ones, friends, or simply to enrich your own collection. Each mug will be a little piece of joy, ready to be used and admired.
