How Hoffmans came to be

Hoffman’s Pattern of the Past also known as ‘The Sea of China” was founded in 1944 by Joseph Allen Murphy Jr., it was founded on the historic Main Street here in Princeton Illinois but had existed since the mid 1800’s. Once founded, J.A Murphy bought the business and soon began to realize that tabletops were changing after World War II occurred, he then began to offer a service of finding replacement pieces for discontinued patterns. Then the growth of Hoffman’s began, buying only from the manufacturers they were starting to be known for having the largest selection of new “Store Stock” patterns. Three generations of Murphy’s family have been keeping this place going. It started with Murphy, his wife Winnie and their daughter Jyl, and a few staff members which then grew into a business that helps over thousands of customers across the globe find and replace their broken or missing china pieces.
