There is not one building that non-smoking students/faculty/guests can enter that does not have smokers lighting up nearby. The campus is polluted. The carcinogens in second-hand smoke fill the air both outside the classrooms and inside as it can be smelled by students sitting in class, trying to get an education in which they pay for. Third hand smoke or the tobacco residue also pollutes the camp
us as there are cigarette butts and dust everywhere. Rhode Island College enables smoking to continue by the placement of multiple receptacles with ash trays that are positioned closer than the recommendation of the Rhode Island Department of Health which is 50 feet from the envelop of the entrances to all buildings. Enough is enough! A serious change needs to take place. No non-smoking individual at Rhode Island College should have to experience the unhealthy practices of others who decide to light up. Non-smokers have a right to be able to take a fresh breath of air. The college, by law, is supposed to provide a safe atmosphere for it's students and employees and it's not living up to the standard.
