Bonsai Northwest Bonsai Northwest is Seattle’s premier bonsai nursery and community hub for over 40 years. Bonsai Northwest was founded by the incredibly talented Sharon Muth.

Discover trees, tools, pottery, wire, rare bonsai material, expert advice, classes, demos, workshops, and a welcoming place for bonsai lovers. Bonsai Northwest has been supporting the art and hobby of bonsai in the Pacific Northwest since 1985. She founded the business to sell her handcrafted bonsai pots to local club members. As the business expanded, it incorporated finished bonsai trees, beginner bonsai lessons, and fine Japanese pottery. When Sharon’s son, John Muth, took the reins of the family business, he pioneered importing bonsai trees and expanded the availability of bonsai pottery throughout the U.S. Bonsai Northwest is still dedicated to serving the bonsai community.

Part 2 of the 13-part series we created for some educational material. Watering may be the most important part of cultivating bonsai, that needs to be mastered by each practitioner.

It’s been a busy week already here at the nursery! Last Saturday, Cory taught a fantastic and well received Beginner class.

Monday, Jay packed and shipped all the azaleas that were purchased over the summer, that had been waiting for cooler weather and temperatures around the country.

We have also been participating in the Facebook Bonsai Auctions this week and listed a handful of trees there.

This Sunday, October 11th, we have friend of the nursery, Tony Fajarillo, coming in to teach the Beginner class.

There are still available spots in the upcoming Beginner classes, along with the Bring Your Own Tree workshop with Cory on October 18th and the Saikei class with Kerri Bailey on November 15th.

You can see the schedule for classes at - www.bonsainw.com/classes

We are excited to share our latest and most ambitious collaboration with Alex Nelson, a 13-part short video educational series. Many thanks again, Alex!

We hope you enjoy these and maybe take away some tips that will help you with your trees. Questions, comments and dialogue are welcome, as that’s how we learn and hopefully improve our practices.

We plan to release a new video weekly.

Bonsai 101 is this Saturday! There are still a few openings in our upcoming class.

Curious about bonsai but not sure where to start? We’ll cover what bonsai is, what makes it different from other art forms, how to repot your first tree, and the basics of keeping it happy and healthy. There will also be plenty of time for questions, discussion, and getting a better feel for what bonsai is all about.

We keep our class sizes small and intimate so everyone has plenty of opportunity for one-on-one instruction and hands-on guidance.

Interested? Visit bonsainw.com/classes to sign up and join us this Saturday!

One of our favorite times of the year has arrived - the autumn or fall season. In the northern hemisphere, temperatures cool, school begins, football and basketball seasons return and plants begin their gradual preparation for winter dormancy.

Of course, the beautiful colors of the season that can been seen in deciduous trees and other plants is a highlight of autumn!

Pictured is one of our Japanese maple bonsai in stunning shades of red and orange. The photo is by friend of the nursery, Alex Nelson.

Keep an eye out for a fantastic and educational short video series that Alex is working on for us!

The leaves losing their green color and eventually dropping is called: leaf senescence. It’s the natural aging process that occurs in deciduous trees as they prepare for winter. As daylight decreases and temperatures cool, the tree gradually breaks down chlorophyll, causing leaves to lose their green color and reveal yellow, orange, and red pigments.

Nutrients such as nitrogen are reclaimed from the leaves and stored in the tree, while a protective layer forms at the leaf stem, eventually causing the leaves to detach and fall. This process conserves energy and resources, allowing the tree to enter winter dormancy and survive unfavorable conditions.

A fresh selection of Sol Zimmerdahl pots has arrived at Bonsai Northwest.

Handmade one-of-a-kind pieces by Portland artist Sol Zimmerdahl, each with its own shape, texture, and character. Our last selection of medium-sized pots went quickly, so we’re happy to have another group in the shop.

These pots lend themselves especially well to kusamono, succulents, and non-traditional bonsai, but they’re also interesting pieces of ceramic in their own right.

We still have a few pieces remaining from the previous shipment as well, so there’s a good variety to browse.

For those that have trees here waiting to be shipped, we wanted to provide the update that we will be shipping them beginning on Monday, October 5th!

Also, we are going to begin selling material online for shipping, now that the temperatures around most of the country have cooled. So, if you have had your eye on something we have, get in touch and we can discuss it.

More details and updates about what platform we decide to use will be forthcoming.

Here’s a glimpse of what you might expect while taking a class with us here.

We were incredibly lucky to have friend of the nursery, Alex Nelson, come in and take footage of the last Beginner class taught by Jay.

Look for more collaborations between us in the future. In the meantime, enjoy the short video and find Alex’s info below.

The weather is decidedly cooling down and the days are slowly shortening. Some leaves are starting to change color. That also means that we are going to begin shipping trees!

If you haven’t been on the website recently, you might want to check it out as we have been offering Satsuki Azaleas for online order and shipping for a couple of months now and have shipped some whenever the temperatures have permitted. However, for the very hot days of the summer, we have delayed shipping and expect to get those all to their new owners shortly here soon.

Keep an eye on our Facebook and Instagram pages for when we open up shipping for other species!

Let us know in the comments what kinds of trees you might be interested in purchasing and having shipped to your door.
