In Bihar, in eastern India, home to Bhagalpur, the city long known as Silk City, many of our silks are still made the slow way. Wild Tussar, gathered and worked on hand looms, its golden-cream color drawn from the forest the silkworms feed in. Some remain undyed, raw and rare. Others take on gentle color from turmeric or tea leaf.
None of it is uniform. The slub of the yarn, the shift in tone, the small irregularities of the weave are what tell you a person made it.
That same variation gives the color its depth. Across the hand-loomed silks the palette runs wide, from undyed ivory to the deepest indigo and red, each shade rich and dimensional, the color carried in the thread itself.
